We were all really stoked about the DVD sets from Critics’ Choice (and Mill Creek) when they started turning up. Then, the announcements stopped. And now, the existing titles are on sale for just $8.29 each. This is a great time to fill in the gaps in your collection.
There’s the Audie Murphy set above (click on the picture). There are also Western sets featuring Glenn Ford, William Holden and George Montgomery. There’s some really good non-Western stuff, too, like a great Boston Blackie set.
Sadly the Mill Creek deal with Sony/Columbia seems to have run it’s course. No news on the alleged deal with Mill Creek and Fox/Disney but I doubt if it would include anything readers of this blog would be interested in-SIERRA BARON restored in 2.35 Cinemascope-Crikey I’d be happy with the John Kimborough B Westerns especially SUNDOWN JIM with Virginia Gilmore and Arlene Whelan.
Still one can but dream-Mill Creek’s WHISTLER set was smashing and their Alan Ladd had a lovely version of THE BLACK KNIGHT-Toby as a Cushing addict you NEED this set.
I DO need that Ladd set, for Peter Cushing if nothing else. Gonna be placing an order soon.
Speaking of Mr. Cushing, finally got around to watching the Shout Factory Blu-Ray of Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell. It’s one of those films that didn’t impress me all that much as a kid, but now gets better and better every time I watch it. You’re always in good hands with Fisher and Cushing.
Had such high hopes for this CC/MC thing. Seemed like a great way to keep physical media going for collector oddballs like us. It’s a shame their Castle set, which should’ve been glorious, turned out to be such a dud.
One thing that’s interesting with the Critics’ Choice website is that if you click the Mill Creek button to sort titles, you get Mill Creek stuff, these Critics Choice titles AND a few Disney things. Odd.
I’ve been after a nice print of THE BLACK KNIGHT for ages and the transfer in the CC/Mill Creek set is great.
The film is a guilty pleasure and Cushing is on fine form as the villain.
The thriller 13 WEST STREET is very good as well and Steiger actually underplays his role as the cop on the case-as later Ladd the film is very good-the transfer is lovely.
Looking for future releases is depressing with all the junk that one has to plough through; Kino’s “Elsa” series has generated an avalanche of favorable response- to each his own.
As I keep saying it’s slim pickings these days for B Movie lovers I’m just happy with what I’ve got these days.
I’m on a real Monogram kick at the moment and I notice nobody owns the rights to the Joe Palooka movies-not Warners, not MGM/UA not Paramount-I guess the rights rest with the Hal Chester estate-you cannot even see these things online-as they are Monogram’s I’d love to check them out.
I understand that the transfer for Warners WICHITA is outstanding
