Just saw that John Ford’s The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) is coming to 4K in April — the first Ford or Wayne picture to do so.

It’s hard to imagine this looking any better than the Blu-Ray, but who’s to complain? It’s one of the finest Westerns ever made.

Elvis Aaron Presley
January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977

Today, Elvis would’ve been 87. Wow.

Here he is with Don Siegel, making what I think is his best movie, Flaming Star (1960). A while back, this terrific Western was the subject of my appearance on the excellent West Movies Podcast. Seems like a good day to bring it up.

Peter Bogdanovich
July 30, 1939 – January 6, 2022

Peter Bogdanovich has passed away at 82. He never made a Western (though he tried to), but he provided us all with a wealth of information through his interviews with those who made the best of them: Ford, Hawks, Walsh, Dwan, Stewart, Wayne and others.

Working on this blog and book over the years, I’ve developed a real appreciation for his work as a film historian. His books — from John Ford to This Is Orson Welles to Who The Devil Made It are a real godsend.
