I really hate this. They did some really nice stuff, especially those gorgeous Republics like Flying Tigers (1942) and Johnny Guitar (1954), the Regalscope picture The Quiet Gun (1956) and South Of St.Louis (1949). What a shame.
RIP, Olive Films.

I have those titles, plus War of The Wildcats, Flame of Barbary Coast and Wyoming Outlaw, which is truly a classic B western. Probably a few more. I agree, Toby, hate their disappearance.
Toby: very sad news about OLIVE FILMS. They did release some old Republic films (it appeared they licensed them from Paramount??). I kept hoping that Olive would get control of Bill Elliott’s bigger budget Republics and release them. I already have them on VHS, and a great DVD source, HOLLYWOOD SCRAPHEAP, has a number of them in pristine copies (look up their site: they also have most of the John Payne Westerns and various others)–get them before they disappear.
Thanks for keeping us abreast of the news. Boyd
It will be a shame to see them go.I think the writing was on the wall when not many new releases were posted on their Facebook page.I read recently where one of Paramount’s films (I forget which one) accidently fell into public domain and Olive released an inferior copy, but I have a few of their releases and never had a problem.
After the news last week of the problems at TCM this is another piece of negative news. They did a good job for us.
I bought a lot of their releases, including The Quiet Man and Johnny Guitar. Kino Lorber has really stepped into the breach, though, and new companies arrive as others depart: https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=32845
Paula, thanks for the news. They sound promising.
P.S. Kino Lorber’s new Blu-ray of Will Penny is really beautiful. Remastered from the original camera negative.
Their releases were getting less and less, a great shame as they gave us some great films, many in top quality for the first time.
Here in the U.K. we’ve recently lost Network DVD and Blu Ray. A great supplier of A films, B films and vintage TV series. A large catalogue now locked in liquidation.
I gave up looking at Olive’s new releases a couple years ago. After 2020 almost everything was progressive, sexual related or horror movies.
While they hit the heights with several releases many of their titles I just cannot fathom what market they were aiming for. Of all the great Republic titles why oh why release THE KID FROM CLEVELAND.
OK a zillion baseball fans are going to get on my case but baseball movies have never flown in the UK so I guess that’s our problem 🙂
Also I had problems with some of their artwork THE QUIET GUN for instance….horrendous!
Kino Lorber have a far better marketing ploy if it flies then release more if it does not (Republic’s SINGING GUNS) then move on-obviously KL’s Noir sets are going gangbusters and when the Universal well runs dry (surely not long now) then hopefully KL will move on the Republic also taking in all of those nifty Allied Artists Noirs Paramount Republic own.
I don’t know how things are in the USA but over here in Blighty Cinema Chains are in big trouble with Cineworld/Playhouse losing millions and Empire now ceasing trading I blame all those darn streaming kids.
I loathe muliplexes peopled by cretins who can’t be separated from their smartphones for 2 hours and those ghastly bucket sixed tubs of nachos and the like.
Still when all the mulitplexes are demolished ample space will be available to solve the UK’s dire housing shortage-no Green Belt issues there guys!
As long as Kino keep going as well as Australia’s wonderful Imprint outfit I for one will be happy.
Another casualty recently was the UK’s Network label which issued some great UK B Movies before moving onto mainly 80’s & 90’s TV which looked like a sticky wicket to me
Gadzooks it’s just not cricket.
Thanks Paula for the heads up on WILL PENNY
I think the trouble with a lot of these companies is that the folks making the what-gets-released decisions don’t know much about the movies they have to choose from. These days, noir seems to be a pretty safe bet, but with other things, knowledge of the films is a big plus.
John k,I agree that Imprint are a wonderful label. Now they’ve announced BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA in a hardbox.I just recently ordered this which comes with a slipcase .I should have waited a little longer.Umbrella Entertainment release some good things too.I am ordering THE LAST WAVE which comes with a stack of extras starring Rechard Chamcerlain and David Gulpilil.Shout Factory are releasing a Irwin Allen disaster collection( about time )without THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE and THE TOWERING INFERNO which they couldn’t get .BEYOND THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE and WHEN TIME RAN OUT are included .I’m hoping that they include the extended versions which a lot of people want.5 more flops,er disasters are in there as well.
Should have prepped the above before sending typo’s galore but I guess you’ll get my point.
In future in the UK at least I can see the future of cinema being “Boutique” cinemas i.e mainly old refurbed surviving flea pits for the true cinema experience-no smartphones to be seen thank God.
Toby I feel that you are right in your comment above.
I still get heartened when an obscure B Movie like BLONDE ICE gets a 4K makeover.
Warner Archive right now seem to be concentrating on bona fide classics or near classics-I sure hope that they have not abandoned B Movies altogether-saw the trailer of an old MGM B called MAIN STREET AFTER DARK it’s online (trailer) and that’s just my kinda movie cast and all.
What I really miss these days is the avalanche of B Movies released on MOD DVD by Warner Archive-Sony Choice Collection-Universal Vault and Fox Cinema Archives. I know the latter got tons of flak for releasing CinemaScope films as 4×3 but they did unearth a whole heap of programmers generally in watchable quality-the sort of films that are hard to come by these days.
Warner Archive’s old DVD of the MGM B Picture BEWITCHED works both as a Noir and a really scary psychological thriller-it totally creeped me out the other night I might add.
Tough news. I enjoyed their titles especially the special editions that they did like ‘The Quiet Man’ and ‘Rio Grande’ as a John Ford fan were a must have. I’m glad a company like Kino Lorber keeps doing what they are doing.
