Essential stuff at a terrific price.
With this two-disc set from Mill Creek, you get the five Columbia titles from Randolph Scott and Budd Boetticher’s Ranown cycle — The Tall T (1957), Decision At Sundown (1957), Buchanan Rides Alone (1958), Ride Lonesome (1959) and Comanche Station (1960, above). And if all that isn’t enough, they’ve thrown in Joseph H. Lewis’ A Lawless Street (1955) to sweeten the deal.
Available September 15. Buy a whole case of ’em, folks, and your holiday shopping’s done. Now, what do we have to do to get a Blu-ray version of this?
Given that they are cramming 6 films onto two discs, it seems unlikely that they will be anamorphic of have the same image quality of the previously-released editions of these films.
Mill Creek tends to stick with the anamorphic transfers, from what I’ve seen. Since these films are so short (all under 80 minutes), maybe the mastering won’t be too compromised.
Bottom line on this is, I’m so glad these things are going to be so affordable, so more people can see them.
Oddly enough Explosive Media in Germany are
releasing COMMANCHE STATION as a stand alone disc.
They say if Sony can supply a high def version they will
release a blu-ray edition too.
I hope so because it’s the most visually impressive of all
Boetticher’s Westerns.
The mention on the Alive Ag site is wrong; COMMANCHE
STATION will have an English soundtrack.
There is an added bonus on the disc of a selection of
Randolph Scott trailers.
Alive are also releasing GUNS OF FORT PETTICOAT on DVD
and again if Sony can supply a high def master they will
release that on Blu as well.
As mentioned before,besides GUNMAN’S WALK
Alive are also releasing MAN CALLED SLEDGE on Blu Ray.
This was James Garner’s only Euro Western.
I don’t remember too much about it except there is a certain
attraction for TV Western fans of having Maverick,Chester,
Colt 45 and Gunslinger all in the same film.
For a Euro effort it’s top heavy with American talent as
Claude Akins and Ken Clark are also involved.
The film was directed by the great Vic Morrow.
Tim Holt Goes Widescreen!!!
It’s more a Manic Monday for me rather than a Tim Holt
Tuesday but for those interested the DVD Beaver have just
produced the screen-shots for Tim’s MONSTER THAT
CHALLENGED THE WORLD in lovely high-def widescreen.
The Beaver, like Toby and myself just cannot get enough of this
Fifties classic creature stuff and MTCTW was one of the very best.
I can’t wait to get my hands on that Blu-ray of Monster That Challenged The World.
cool — I only have one of these on DVD, so they are a god-send!
I am doing something I thought I would never do. I am buying a western with German language and English subtitles .The movie is SARTANA DOES NOT FORGIVE .I could buy a DVDr with English .The main attraction with this movie is Gilbert Roland and Jack Elam and the trailer looks good .A guy from ALIVE AG told me on some movies they are not allowed to include English .It has something to do with rights ,but when I see some with English and some with out and made by the same studio, I wonder why.
Germany has put out quite a lot of great ’50’s westerns BUT in German only. I almost bought “Filmjuwelen”‘s issue of “At Gunpoint” w/Fred MacMurray UNTIL I read the small print it’s German only language. Forget it. Same with other great westerns, fine print reveals it’s German only, so forget it. I don’t want a movie even if it’s highly desirable if I can only hear it in German or any other foreign language. I don’t even think they should be allowed to issue commercial versions of these movies unless they are in their original format, that includes the language!
As for this Randy Scott deal, and really WHAT A DEAL IT IS! This is another case of being punished for being the first kid on the block to own something. Years ago I bought the Budd Boetticher R. Scott collection set that included all movies that are now available from Mill Creek. Also bought separately the Columbia individual issue of “Lawless Steet”. Small fortune spent and now here comes all those movies at a fraction of the price. Where do I go to get my refund?
Though really I’d rather have these original DVD releases, not only are they on 6 DVDs but they include commentary and special introductions. So for the quality and the extras I still wouldn’t trade my oldies for the newbie. But if I just arrived on the scene, this new release would be an ideal buy.
John K ,I checked out the Panamint Cinema website to see what they had and discovered a movie called INFERNO with Robert Ryan and Rhonda Fleming .I’ve never seen this film before ,only parts of it and it looks good .I see it’s also on Fox Archive .
As mentioned earlier ,I ordered SARTANA DOES NOT FORGIVE but cancelled it at the last moment .I don’t know if I could watch it in German .
gcwe1, I don’t think I can ever bring myself about to watching a Western presented in any language other than English, after all, it IS a Western, and I’ll gladly settle for a poor foreign dub (Euro-Western) than having to read sub-titles…But I’m especially annoyed when an American Western is available only in some foreign language with English sub-titles as an option only, especially when it’s now being presented in a re-mastered pristine version that absolutely NO!!!!!!!! American company will touch because they’ve deemed that the viewing audience consists of mostly half-dead old timers more in tune to watching Andy Griffith, Gun Smoke and Bonanza TV episodes sponsored by questionable life insurance and mobile wheel chair ads. This grates me deeply. Respect your heritage, preserve your film history. Release these films with the American consumer in mind. I’d like to believe that there are those younger than home health care needs that would really like to see quality releases of quality films that are now only being released in Germany without an English audio option….Something is drastically (or commercially) wrong here, and I feel like I’m getting sick….I don’t need another Blu-ray release of a Western that’s already been released as a damned good DVD. I just need more quality Western releases PERIOD!!!…and not where I need to purchase an all-region player just to be insulted by watching a classic American Western in German only.
The Boetticher/Scott westerns are an art form. No other western star even comes close to the high quality run over a 5 year period that these guys gave us, and it comes on the heels of “7 Men from Now” which is awesome in its own right. Randolph Scott in the late 1950s is almost as dominant as the 49ers in the 1980s.
I literally could just watch these 6 movies over and over again, maybe with a good color copy of FIGHTING MAN OF THE PLAINS thrown in for good measure.
All very nice but these movies have been out on DVD for years now…..
And I suspect the quality of these releases to be underwhelming,
all these movies on just 2 discs…….
Sony should put them on Blu-rays!
German label Explosive Media will publish “Comanche Station” on Blu Ray later this year:
