As my commentary notes for The Long Riders (1980) take shape (for Imprint’s upcoming Blu-Ray set), I keep bumping into all sorts of interesting things. The coolest was a chance to speak with James Keach for a bit, making sure I had the story of the film’s development correct. (He is justifiably proud and fond of the film.)
This BFI interview with Walter Hill was terrific, covering his relationship with Budd Boetticher, working with Sam Peckinpah and Steve McQueen and his feel for Westerns. Enjoy!
Toby, thank you for the link to “Walter Hill: stories from 50 years of Hollywood action filmmaking” an interview of Walter Hill by BFI’s Matthew Thrift. Walter Hill had a lot of interesting and important things to say. I enjoyed reading the interview. I liked what Hill had to say about the world always wanting stories, ” Nobody can tell you how the future is going to play out, but one thing I do know is that stories will be demanded, and stories will be told.”
Hate that twenty minutes was cut out. This and ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford’ are my favorite Jesse films.
