Adele Mara (Adelaida Delgado)
(April 28, 1923 – May 7, 2010)
Adele Mara was born 100 years ago today.
She was under contract at Republic Pictures from the mid-40s through 1951. She was in pictures with John Wayne, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, William Elliott, you name it. Prior to Republic, she’d been at Columbia, where she was put in everything from Three Stooges shorts to Crime Doctor and Blondie movies. All sorts of cool stuff.
She was married to writer/director/producer Roy Huggins (Hangman’s Knot, Maverick, The Rockford Files) for over 50 years.
Huggins also created a little show called The Fugitive. 🙂
You’re right! In my mind, The Rockford Files overshadows everything!
Adele Mara’s presence always perks up a film, and I enjoy her many appearances in Republic b-films. Favorite might be her lead role as a lady detective in “Exposed” (1947), a breezy little affair. Always felt she had a particularly good flair for comedy (look at her smallish supporting role in “Campus Honeymoon” -1948, for example), but didn’t seem to get too much opportunity in that vein.
Adele Mara is a wonderful actress who I always like to see in movies and tv shows. I first recall her in all those tv Westerns of the 1955-1962 era and of course the Republic Pictures of the 1940’s and early 1950’s.
I like her as a female detective in Exposed(1947), which was somewhat ahead of the times. I’ve never seen CAMPUS HONEYMOON(filmed 1947, released 1948) and where would you even find it, for viewing?
Adele is in the upcoming world-wide Blu-ray Imprint release of THE CATMAN OF PARIS(filmed 1945, released 1946), which is good news in the hard copy owners world.
If anyone is interested Barnes & Noble have 30% off Criterion titles including THE RENOWN WESTERNS.
Graham, always good news for hard copy owners, especially if its Western Movie titles.
Walter,in Australia we have JB HIFI.They sometimes have a 20% or 30% sale. The other day I bought RAY HARRYHAUSEN ULTIMATE COLLECTION for 20% off.
Graham, here in the USA it’s a pricey collection, $114 on eBay and $119 on Amazon. This is the Blu-ray collection of seven movies.
THE VALLEY OF GWANGI(filmed 1967, released 1969) isn’t in this ultimate collection, but I’m sure you’ve probably seen the movie.
