Directed by Lesley Selander
Starring John Dehner, Gregg Palmer, Frances Helm, Don Gordon, Harry Dean Stanton
Revolt At Fort Laramie (1957) is a pretty good color Lesley Selander picture. It’s always great to see a Bel-Air movie make it to Blu-Ray.
But what’s interesting is that the Blu-Ray that’s on the way from MGM looks like part of an MOD program. Could that be cranking up again? If so, how’s about Rebel In Town (1956)?
Thanks to Paula for the tip.
They’re also releasing the 1958 Joseph H.Lewis film Terror in a Texas Town tomorrow (April 25). Looking forward to reviews to see how bad or good these MOD discs look.
Paula, wasn’t there an ARROW Blu-ray of TERROR IN A TEXAS TOWN(filmed 1957, released 1958) released several years ago?
Gregg Palmer was always a great convention guest. Full of stories, memories, and wacky jokes!
Bert, good to hear from you. Gregg Palmer is an actor I always enjoy seeing turn up in so many movies and tv shows. I’m sure he had a lot of good stories.
Here is a good article and interview with Gregg Palmer, which I enjoyed reading.

Toby, this is good news indeed. Now that we have REVOLT AT FORT LARAMIE(filmed 1956, released 1957) on Blu-ray, wouldn’t it be really something to have THE YELLOW TOMAHAWK(filmed 1953, released 1954) in color released on Blu-ray. Wishful thinking, I suppose.
Walter-Yes Arrow released a very nice looking Blu Ray of the Lewis film several years back.
Was not REVOLT AT FORT LARAMIE (Harry) Dean Stanton’s debut?
Are not MGM/UA now owned by Amazon?
Quiet frankly I cannot see Amazon shelling out for the lab bill for YELLOW TOMAHAWK when not even Kino can be bothered-perhaps stellar sales on THE LOOTERS might change their mind-plus the fact the film has one of Lee Van Cleef’s very best early roles and Rita Moreno as well.
At least REVOLT AT FORT LARAMIE is making it’s Blu Ray debut.
Cannot think of too many United Artists Westerns on the missing list ‘though I would like a Blu Ray of REBEL IN TOWN and ESCORT WEST. Would not turn my nose up at TROOPER HOOK or GUNSIGHT RIDGE despite they are very minor Joel’s.
Two totally excellent United Artists Noirs stil on the missing list Fregonese’s ferocious BLACK TUESDAY and Mark Stevens totally overlooked TIMETABLE.
BTW does anyone know what’s holding up JOHNNY CONCHO this film has not even had a DVD release.
Furthermore Bel Air’s biggest budget film DESERT SANDS is still awaiting a release on physical media.,
John K, about REVOLT AT FORT LARAMIE(filmed 1956, released 1957) being Harry Dean Stanton’s movie debut. It could have been his first, but then again it could have been TOMAHAWK TRAIL(1956), or THE WRONG MAN(1956). Stanton’s part in each movie is listed as close to the same time in 1956. THE WRONG MAN premiered first on December 13, 1956. According to the American Film Institute(AFI) REVOLT AT FORT LARAMIE was filmed from mid May to late May 1956. TOMAHAWK TRAIL was filmed from mid May-early June 1956. THE WRONG MAN was filmed from March 26-June 6, 1956. The NEW YORK TIMES, IMDb, and Wikipedia list TOMAHAWK TRAIL as his first movie. The American Film Institute lists REVOLT AT FORT LARAMIE as his first.
Let’s get Alfred Hitchcock’s THE WRONG MAN out of the way. It looks like that IMDb has listed the wrong actor as a department of correction employee or guard. The American Film Institute lists Harry Stanton as a department of correction guard not Harry Dean Stanton. They are two different actors. Until PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID(filmed 1972-73, released 1973) Harry Dean is listed as Dean Stanton or H.D. Stanton. I’ve viewed THE WRONG MAN and I didn’t see Harry Dean anywhere in the movie. Also, I’ve never read anything about Harry Dean being in a Hitchcock movie. As far as I know, Harry Dean never said he was in a Hitchcock movie.
The American Film Institute lists REVOLT AT FORT LARAMIE as Harry Dean’s first movie, listed as Dean Stanton. Also, Joe Leydon, who I think has commented on this blog, wrote a really good article on Harry Dean for VARIETY names REVOLT AT FORT LARAMIE as his first movie. I’ve found Joe Leydon to be a reliable source. Leydon has interviewed Harry Dean in the past.
John K, I know that I’ve taken a long route in answering your question, but there is so much misinformation out there. I think it would be pretty safe to say that REVOLT AT FORT LARAMIE is Harry Dean Stanton’s movie debut. In my opinion Harry Dean Stanton is one of the best character actors of all time.
Here is Joe Leydon’s article.

I note a rare Boetticher is making it’s Blu Ray debut in Germany CITY BENEATH THE SEA with Robert Ryan,Anthony Quinn,Mala Powers and Suzan Ball.
Very surprised that Kino have not released this one considering it’s star power.
The blurb says it’s from a new HD master….let’s see-as it’s quiet cheap I will report back when I’ve viewed mine.
Speaking of Quinn I watched the sensational Blu Ray of LAST TRAIN FROM GUN HILL last night-I’ve been watching so many Universal Horrors & Spookers in black & white of late I thought time was just right for a big budget VistaVision Western Top Drawer Sturges with Douglas & Quinn at the top of their game.
Mighty fine to see old timer Charles Stevens as Kirk’s Pa in law.
I always enjoy seeing Charles Stevens in these old westerns. A very young Stevens had a really neat (and memorably grim) little death-scene in “The Good Bad Man” (1916), which Kino released a few years back. Character players like Stevens add so much to the genre. I really relish all those old-timers, and what they brought to film. Even down to the bit-players and extras, who often added so much color and sense of realism.
Great news about “City Beneath the Sea” having a new master! And Walter, great article on Palmer. Appreciated the link! I’m also curious how far this new MGM-mod series might go. Lot of interesting little United Artists B-films, back in the 1950s.
Bert, I agree that character actors add so much to the Western Movie genre or any other genre. I always enjoy seeing Burt Mustin(1884-1977) in anything.
The character actors are like salt and pepper or Texas Pete — they add a kick to what’s in front of you.
I’m partial to Frank Ferguson, James Griffith, Wallace Ford and James Milliken. What am I thinking — I love ’em all.
Toby, there are so many good character actors and actresses that make the movies better by their being in them. It would take pages and pages to name them all at one time.
Thanks for the Harry Dean link Walter.
It remains to be seen what is forthcoming from the MGM/UA/Amazon MOD Blu Ray series.
I would much rather any much wanted old United Artists titles would be released by Kino Lorber assuming they still have a deal with MGM/UA.
A Blu Ray of BABY FACE NELSON is way overdue as is a fully restored version of STRANGER ON HORSEBACK
BTW Bert Greene-the blurb for the German version of CITY BENEATH THE SEA says it’s from a new restoration but you never know with these obscure German imprints.
I will be getting the Blu Ray but please wait until I comment here what the quality’s like-I really want this film I like Ryan and Quinn and am a huge Mala Powers fan.
These German Blu Ray’s are something of a minefield but Explosive Media are always reliable and always licenced from the correct distributors.
Explosive have recently or are about to release on Blu Ray Selander’s WAR PAINT (the best Bel Air Western) and FORT YUMA.
As for other imprints you pays your money and takes a chance. In fact talking about oddities SLAVE QUEEN OF BABYLON is due for release in Germany reputedly one of the goriest of Peplums.
SLAVE QUEEN OF BABYLON is of interest because it’s John Ericson’s only Peplum and he’s supported by Yvonne Furneaux.
This release is reputed to be the complete uncut version but the bad news is that the soundtrack is only in Italian or German. I wonder if this film ever made it to England or America-Peplum fans will no doubt welcome this release……paging Kino Lorber who are on a roll with their Peplums right now.
John K, concerning SLAVE QUEEN OF BABYLON(1963), as far as I know it never played theatrically in the USA, Canada, or the UK. It went directly to the local television market in 1964 in the USA and by 1972 it was airing on Canadian tv. As far as I know the movie never played in my neck of the woods. After 1980 it just disappeared from tv, and I don’t think it ever played on tv in the UK. This Peplum reads like it’s an interesting movie.
I note on Kino Lorber’s Facebook Page a truly bad Bronson Western THE WHITE BUFFALO (did not MACKENNA’S GOLD prove J Lee Thompson has no right to direct Westerns!)
gets 355 “likes” tons more even than WILL PENNY.
Why kids these these days seem to prefer trash like the Bronson flick and dreadful Spaghetti Westerns is beyond me yet the labels keep churning ’em out.
THE WHITE BUFFALO junkheaps a stellar supporting cast:Clint Walker;Stuart Whitman,John Carradine and Douglas Fowley. FROM NOON TILL THREE is even worse.
John K, I’ll take THE LAST HUNT(filmed 1955, released 1956) with Robert Taylor, Stewart Granger, Lloyd Nolan, Debra Paget, Russ Tamblyn, Ed Lonehill, and Wasu Maza(Dewey Beard) over WHITE BUFFALO(filmed 1976, released 1977) any day of the week.
John k,usually when these German releases say uncut it is the proper running time because they are cut when first released.I may be wrong in this case but I have noticed with a lot of releases.
Graham, do you have the Koch Media Blu-ray of THE ALAMO(filmed 1959, released 1960), which has both the 162-minute version and the 202-minute version?
Walter, the Koch release sold out pretty quick and they wouldn’t ship it to me.I have the ESC release from France which has the extended version.Although Robert Taylor is one of my favourite actors,I wasn’t real fond of THE LAST HUNT.
Graham, thanks for the info. I still have my old MGM/UA Home Video VHS copy from 1992, which is 202 minutes long.
Yes, Robert Taylor didn’t portray his usual character in THE LAST HUNT.
Walter-
Mentioning THE LAST HUNT beside THE WHITE BUFFALO is (for me) like mentioning RUN OF THE ARROW beside DANCES WITH WOLVES.
I’ll take Fuller’s film over Costner’s vanity project any day of the week.
BTW Walter did you see my note back on the Ranown Criterion Collection thread that Clint seems to be making one final film for Warners David Zaslav nonewithstanding.
One of the industry heavy hitters behind this project is the guy who used to be head of production at Paramount and is now going solo as an independent.
JUROR NUMBER TWO is a legal thriller and it’s not clear if Clint will also star alongside Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette.
It’s rumoured to be Clint’s Swan Song but you never know with Clint. The Great Man turns 93 on May 31.
John K, I’ve yet to hear out of Clint Eastwood’s own mouth that JUROR#2(2023) will be his final movie. I think Clint will be making movies until he can’t anymore. Age, as far as I’m concerned is just a number.
I think some of the other executives at Warner Bros. Discovery just might have shown David Zaslav some figures concerning Clint Eastwood’s career at Warner Bros. Clint always brings his movies in on, or under budget and ahead of schedule, or on schedule. How many producer/directors do that today? Warner Bros. has made a lot of money and still do on Eastwood movies.
Yes, I saw that Adam Goodman, who used to be president of production at Paramount, is one of the producers of JUOR#2 along with Clint’s Malpaso company regulars Tim Moore and Jessica Meier. I think that along with Clint and his crew, Adam Goodman, who has been in the movie business for over thirty-five years, might know more than David Zaslav about making movies.
Here is something recently about Clint and action figures. Clint comes in at about the 10-minute mark.
Funny how we’ve drifted into H8 territory but the German Blu Ray of SLAVE QUEEN OF BABYLON (Slaves Of Semiramis) is given a terrible review on Amazon de but lo and behold there is a very nice CinemaScope version on-line and in English as well!
This is the sort of fare Kino Lorber do so well.
The film had a sort of companion piece WAR GODS OF BABYLON (1962) with Howard Duff and the delicious Jackie (Joycelyn) Lane-that too can be viewed online in English and CinemaScope.
By terrible review I mean picture quality-VHS standard and the wrong ratio to boot!
Stick to the online version if you are curious-I’m sure Walter will supply the link if he’s reading this.
John K, yes, I’ve found both SLAVE QUEEN OF BABYLON(1963) and WAR GODS OF BABYLON(1962) on PEPLUM TV, which is on YouTube. I just haven’t got around to viewing them yet. Viewing full length movies on YouTube isn’t the way I like to view movies, but if there is no other way, I will.
These movies mentioned can be found on PEPLUM TV. There are 92 movies listed, just scroll down until you find the ones you want to view.

Another great link from Walter and thanks so much for the Clint clip as well.
