The Criterion Collection has announced an upcoming 4K set of Randolph Scott and Budd Boetticher’s Ranown Cycle: The Tall T (1957), Decision At Sundown (1957), Buchanan Rides Alone (1958), Ride Lonesome (1959) and Comanche Station (1960).
It’s coming in July, so get to shopping for 4K players and TVs!
Wish someone would convince the John Wayne estate to pave the way to get Seven Men From Now (1956), the film that launched the Scott-Boetticher collaboration, out on Blu-Ray.
That would mean a triple dip from the DVD Ranown collection to the Indicator Blu Ray collection. I’m happy with what I’ve got-funds can only stretch so far.
How about a 4K version of WINCHESTER’73-RUN OF THE ARROW and SILVER LODE to name but 3.
Is there a problem with Batjac regarding SEVEN MEN FROM NOW ? that’s way overdue for a Blu Ray release.
Not sure why the Wayne estate isn’t getting on the Blu-Ray wagon. Hondo is it, I think.
Then there’s the six Randolph Scott Columbia Westerns still not available on Blu Ray.
GUNFIGHTERS-CORONER CREEK-THE DOOLINS OF OKLAHOMA-THE WALKING HILLS-TEN WANTED MEN and 7TH CAVALRY this would make a fine Mill Creek set.
Warners should release WESTBOUND on Blu Ray with a bonus of a couple of the Boetticher Maverick episodes.
Also Scott Warners Westerns really need a Blu Ray upgrade especially CARSON CITY-TALL MAN RIDING and THE BOUNTY HUNTER each padded out with cartoons & Joe MacDoakes shorts.
Can’t believe WA hasn’t gotten around to The Bounty Hunter in the US. Heard at one point they were thinking about doing it in 3D. At this point, I’d be overjoyed with a widescreen DVD.
Seventh Cavalry would be great on Blu-Ray, as would the others. I love Doolins and The Walking Hills.
BTW Imprint have finally announced their much anticipated Walter Hill set-this will generate waves.
So glad that you are involved with this prestige project.
I’m really excited about that one. It’s the “newest” film I’ve done a commentary for! It’s good to go outside the 50s Western thing every so often.
Imprint do great work I love their Noir box sets-I’ve just ordered Vol 4 it broke the bank a bit but their releases are worth it, besides the short runs mean they soon become very desirable collector’s item’s their packaging/graphics are superb.
I cannot wait for next month’s CAT MAN OF PARIS which I’ve suggested to them several times.
The feature length documentary on Republic Pictures should alone be worth the price.
Regarding Batjac-SEVEN MEN FROM NOW I think other Batjac titles have been released on Blu Ray especially PLUNDER OF THE SUN which Imprint included on one of their Noir box sets (despite the title the film IS a Noir)
The trouble with SEVEN MEN FROM NOW is that very few labels have a deal with Paramount or if you prefer Paramount/Republic.
The main purveyors of Paramount product are Kino Lorber and Imprint and the latter generally stay clear of Westerns.
I’m sure if Indicator had an on going deal with Paramount SEVEN MEN FROM NOW would have surfaced,as those guys love Boetticher.
Indicator’s Boetticher set sold out faster than some of their Hammer-Castle and indeed Noir sets.
I think a main reason could be the continued appeal of Mr Scott who’s films are constantly shown on UK TV on the Freeview channels.
KIno really should take a chance on SEVEN MEN FROM NOW I think they would be highly surprised!
I note in the latest wave of Paramount titles not one Republic title has surfaced let alone a Republic Western-I guess their last wave of Republic Westerns failed to generate much in the way of sales.
Off topic but some encouraging news for me,at least is that it’s official Clint (93 on May 31st) will be making another film for Warner Bros-hearsay states that this will be his final picture.
Details are scant right now but filming is due to commence in June.
Despite the supposed fallout with studio head honcho David Zaslav (who is rumoured to have nixed Eastwood’s Clarence Darrow project) Warners have given JUROR NUMBER TWO their full backing in what is being touted as Eastwood’s final movie.
Also on board in a producer capacity is a gentleman who previously was head of production at Paramount
On imdb Clint is also listed as starring but this is early days-in fact main roles have been confirmed as Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette.
JUROR NUMBER TWO is a legal thriller and wouldn’t it be wonderful to see Clint as a grizzled old judge or a burned out defence attorney trying for one last shot in the classic Eastwood “redemption” manner.
I guess most readers of this blog would rather Clint bowed out with a Western but to know there’s a final Clint project in the pipeline will be great news to many of us.
Clint always said he would know when it’s time to quit and as times are a changing in Hollywood; streaming and all perhaps 2023 is the right time.
