At the risk of appearing political, here’s an interesting article on Barbara Stanwyck, Ronald Reagan and Allan Dwan’s Cattle Queen Of Montana (1954). It’s from American Greatness, written by Emina Melonic. She’s tougher on the movie than I’d be — I’m a sucker for mid-50s Dwan pictures — but I really enjoyed it.
Click on the chunk above to get to the article. And if you’re like me, you’re gonna want to revisit the movie.
And the marquee image up top, what movie is it from?
I must be like you, Toby. I did not care for the film but want to see it again. As for President Reagan, I salute him.
With Allan Dwan and John Alton behind the camera, it’s certainly worth revisiting!
I loved both President Reagan and President Kennedy. Two great men from two different parties.
I have dual Canadian/American citizenship, so I can vote in the states adn voted for both Kennedy and Reagan and both were shot. Most discouraging, oh, and while I consider myself Republican, my daughter emphatically suggested that today, Kennedy would either be one or bring the Democrats closer to Conservatism. That is JFK not any other member of his family.
Barry, I’ll try not to get political here on Toby’s blog, so I’ll just tell a story. The first week of October 2013 my Father and I were on a Honor Flight, in which World War II Veterans and their guardians were flown to Washington D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial. Seventy-four men and two women veterans were on our flight, ages eighty-six to ninety-nine. My Father served in the Navy in the Pacific during the war. That was wonderful day at the Memorial and my eighty-eight-year-old Father said that he never felt so honored in all his life.
Before the flight, some of these men were talking about politics. One veteran, who had lost a leg during the war in Western Europe, was commenting about why he had left the Democrat Party years before and was now a Republican. He said, “I didn’t leave the Democrat Party, the Democrat Party left me.”
Here is a video of some of the World War II veterans, just before they entered the Memorial. My Father is in a wheelchair with me pushing him. You can view us at the 3:37-4:03 time mark. It was a Great Day.
I’ve always wanted to go on one of those flights. And while I’m disappointed that I didn’t get to go, it was nice to find out they had more volunteer “chaperones” than they needed.
Toby, it was a good experience all around. There was quite a story behind that particular Honor Flight and the other flights made that first week in October 2013.
Graham, I think that Ronald Wilson Reagan was our last Great President.
Walter, that is political and I salute you for your taste and judgment which matches mine.
Of course it’s the movie playing in ‘Back to the Future’ when Marty goes back to 1955.
Toby, I enjoyed reading Emina Melonic’s good positive write-up on President Ronald Reagan and Barbara Stanwyck’s friendship and fortitude. Although, I like CATTLE QUEEN OF MONTANA(1954) probably more than she does. It’s no masterpiece, but it’s a fun entertaining movie.
Here’s another positive article concerning letters written by Barbara Stanwyck and Ronald Reagan. There is also a neat photograph of Ronald Reagan, Barbara Stanwyck, and Charlton Heston at the Screen Actors Guild Awards where Stanwyck was presented with the Life Achievement Award in 1966. The story goes that Stanwyck was told that she was to present the award to California Governor-Elect Ronald Reagan. She was surprised when it was the other way around. https://starsandletters.blogspot.com/2020/02/missy-and-president.html
She’s written quite a bit about Reagan and the Wayne/Ford Westerns. I’ve enjoyed them all.
If you are currently ‘out there’, David Rayner,it was good to see your interesting contribution to last Sunday’s “THE FOOTAGE DETECTIVES” on TPTV.
Good to know you enjoy the program too.
