Solid choices all!
Curious that Wayne, Scott and McCrae are not there …. unless they meant ‘western’ exclusively.
Not curious at all. These are B picture stars, appearing exclusively in quickie westerns. The people you mentioned are A stars with Wayne and Scott making the top ten box office throughout the fifties. And beyond for Wayne. Of the B stars, Gene Autry made the real top ten several times.
Barry is correct, because in 1950 John Wayne was number 1 at the box office, Randolph Scott was number 10, Roy Rogers was number 19, and Joel McCrea was number 23. This information comes from the MOTION PICTURE HERALD and FAME, which was a trade paper of the USA movie industry published by Martin Quigley. These rankings were on the basis of ticket sales.
Gene Autry ranked number 4 in 1940, number 6 in 1941, and number 7 in 1942. Gene went into World War II military service in 1942. Roy Rogers came in at number 10 in both 1945 and 1946.
