The Lone Ranger first appeared on radio on January 31, 1933, on Detroit’s WXYZ.
Serials, comics, movies, a TV show, cartoons and lots of other stuff would follow — unfortunately, not a national holiday.
Thanks to Bob Madison for the reminder.

It’s too bad that The Lone Ranger & The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold are not available on Blu-ray. They’re both decent movies & the scenery is very fine. I’d buy them both if given the chance.
I’d love to see those make it to Blu-Ray. I love them both dearly.
The Lone Ranger, grand uncle of The Green Hornet.Dan Reid, the Ranger’s nephew, and Britt’s father connects them.
Toby, anytime the LONE RANGER is mentioned, it brings back very fond memories too me. I first recall viewing the syndicated tv series on Memphis, Tennessee’s WMCT Channel 5 during the 1960’s. I remember it came on before the Huntley and Brinkley newscast and after a locally produced LOONEY ZOO a children’s tv show, which aired the BOWERY BOYS and cartoons. Those were the days.
That sounds like a great afternoon.
It’s funny, but though I was well aware of the Lone Ranger from the serials and the two Clayton Moore movies, I’d seen very little of the TV show — until I went to college and they were on WGN on Saturday mornings, two episodes a day. I became obsessed with it.
Toby, I recall, during the cable-tv explosion of the 1980’s, viewing on WGN Channel 9 Chicago tv shows like TARZAN with Ron Ely; RAWHIDE with Eric Fleming and Clint Eastwood; THE CISCO KID with Duncan Reynoldo and Leo Carrillo; and THE LONE RANGER with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels. The afternoons would be movies, or Cubs baseball.
If I remember right, The Lone Ranger aired from 11 to 12 Saturday mornings. That was Eastern time — I was at NC State.
