Marion Mitchell Morrison (born Marion Robert Morrison)
May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979
John Wayne was born 115 years ago today. Here he is with Gary Cooper and Gene Autry. Judging by what they’re wearing, it looks like Coop was shooting The Hanging Tree and Duke was working on Rio Bravo (both 1959).
This has to be one of the coolest photos ever stuck on this blog.
All three great Americans & actors !
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN WAYNE!
Yes, that is a cool photo taken from the television program NBC-TV’s WIDE WIDE WORLD(1955-58), which was a live Sunday-afternoon documentary series hosted by Dave Garroway. This live episode “The Western” first aired on June 8, 1958.
Here is the episode brought to us by Rob Word’s WORD ON WESTERNS on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Izr8L56gxdw
Thanks for reminding me of this, Walter! I’d forgotten all about it. Have an old VHS copy of this that look almost exactly like what you see on YouTube.
It’s a very evocative photo. Both Wayne and Coop are looking off to the side, while Gene looks into the camera. And both Gene and Duke look happy, while Coop looks like he was in pain.
I would give most anything to be there when the photo was taken; even more to know what each man was thinking.
A similar picture to this one was also taken with those 3 guys including Ward Bond and Gabby Hayes.I did read where it was taken on Gene Autry’s ranch.
Imprint are having a 2 year Anniversary Sale which excludes pre orders and April and May new releases.Just enter TWOYEARS at checkout.
I bought this film without seeing it before ,but what attracted my attention was a picture of a Union soldier on a horse on the cover .OF HUMAN HEARTS starring Walter Huston and James Stewart with a great supporting cast was the film and I highly recommended it .gcwel
While checking forthcoming German releases I see that Explosive Media
have Joseph Pevney’s CONGO CROSSING (1956) announced for September.
I know this is not a Western but the film itself will have great appeal to many
FWOTF regulars.
I remember seeing CONGO CROSSING double billed with RAW EDGE,quiet
an evenings entertainment.
The Explosive Blu Ray will be in the appealing 2.0 ratio and stars Virginia
Mayo,George Nader,Peter Lorre and Michael Pate.
CONGO CROSSING as far as I know is making it’s Worldwide debut on disc.
Again off topic but remaining with appealing releases I see that Australia’s
Umbrella Entertainment have the next instalment in their Retro Horror
Blu Ray double bills;they have paired DOCTOR CYCLOPS with CULT OF THE
COBRA which is fine be me as I don’t have either film in my collection and
furthermore, horror of horrors I’ve never seen CULT OF THE COBRA.
As always with Umbrella the packaging is most attractive.
The double bill has been announced for an August release.
