Directed by George Sherman
Starring Audie Murphy, Felicia Farr, Stephen McNally, Robert Middleton, Jan Merlin
Explosive Media out of Germany has announced another Audie Murphy picture coming to DVD and Blu-Ray in June — George Sherman’s Hell Bent For Leather (1960).
The first of the Audie Murphy pictures produced by Gordon Kay for Universal International, Hell Bent For Leather was directed by George Sherman in CinemaScope and Eastman Color. This one has a good part for Felicia Farr, one of my favorite actresses from 50s Westerns (The Last Wagon, Reprisal!, 3:10 To Yuma), and really incredible Lone Pine location work from Clifford Stine. This is a good one!
I’m so stoked that someone has gotten around to these Gordon Kay Murphy films on Blu-Ray, so a big thanks to the folks at Explosive Media. Highly recommended.
Thanks again to John Knight for the news.
Great news as this is not only a movie I like a lot, but it’s one which ought to really benefit from a Hi-Def upgrade.
By the way, John deserves a medal for his efforts in passing on these pieces of info.
Yes, John’s info is always good. And this is one of Audie’s very best.
Everyone, it is always good news when a Western Movie or tv show, from back in the day, is put out there on Blu-ray. I don’t care where it comes from, as long as it is in all-region format. More Audie Murphy would be a pleasure.
25% of all movies coming out of Hollywood from 1926-1967 were Westerns. Sadly, that isn’t the case today. Although, I don’t think the Western will ever die, because it is such a wonderfully grand art form with a large canvas for stories, galore.
I really like Felicia Farr in Westerns, also. I especially like her in JUBAL(filmed 1955, released 1956). JUBAL is well worth viewing. Felicia Farr is still with us at 89 years young.
I rely on John K, to keep me informed on what is coming down the lane to be released on dvd and Blu-ray. From down under, Graham also keeps me informed. So, thanks Toby and everyone for the information.
Walter,I’m not a fan of JUBAL .My BLU RAY player is playing up at the moment,so it’s being fixed up .I tried to play GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL and it wouldn’t play. This one could do with the Imprint treatment.
Graham, as we know, everyone has their own individual likes and dislikes and that is what makes the world go around.
I really like GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL(filmed 1956, released 1957) and have ever since I first viewed it on tv’s the NBC SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES in 1965. The movie wasn’t Historically accurate, but we don’t look at most movies for Historical accuracy. We can always read more about it for Historical accuracy.
I also like HOUR OF THE GUN(filmed 1966-67, released 1967). Both movies were directed by John Sturges. This movie was a continuation of the Earp/Holliday story, starting with the gunfight at the OK Corral and its aftermath.
When I first heard Frankie Laine singing GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL on the radio and then heard him singing it in the film,I realised that both versions are slightly different. This is usually the case with a lot of themes. The film versions are better in my opinion.
Graham, Frankie Laine had a most memorable voice. Besides his singing of GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL, his rendition of RAWHIDE always comes to my mind and ear.
Walter,RAWHIDE is good .Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington wrote some good songs.I have the full film version of GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL on a Frankie Laine boxset sent to me by a contact I had at Bear Family Records in Germany.Inside was a poster signed by Frankie Laine.
I prefer Johnny Western singing:
Gunfight at the O.K. corral, rawhide , riders in the sky, ballad of Paladin, etc…
Chip, Johnny Western is good, also. His THE BALLAD OF PALADIN(1958) is a Classic, which is one of my favorites.
Johnny Western appeared on THE MARTY STUART SHOW in 2013 and performed the song. He was accompanied by The Riders In the Sky, Harry Ditzel on the french horn, and Marty Stuart.
Here is this CLASSIC song performed live:
Good stuff, Walter! My daughter is a giant Marty Stuart fan (he’s a incredible musician and he owns Clarence White’s B-bender Telecaster), and she’s got her eye out for him and Connie Smith — who they say live near us.
I met Johnny Western at a film convention thing years ago. He was a really nice guy. He’s whip out his guitar and sing ya something at the drop of a hat!
Ahhh…Connie Smith. I bought her first record on RCA in 1965, “ONCE A DAY”, which heavily featured the great steelie, Weldon Myrick.
Connie Smith is wonderful. We hear a lot of her around our house.
In fact, Presley saw her at the Grand Ole Opry tonight.
I’m so envious!! We finally got to go to the Opry in 2011. Saw Jean Shepard and Little Jimmy Dickens (both now sadly departed).
Kino Lorber is releasing THE HORSE SOLDIERS on BLU RAY in June.
