Here’s Janet Leigh wishing us all a happy New Year back in 1955. If it was good enough for ’55, it’s good enough for now.
Here’s hoping everybody has a great ’22!

Adorable Janet Leigh. Bonne et heureuse année 2022 pour tous.
Very nice find.
Happy New year 2022 to Toby and all of the gang !
Happy New Year, Toby!
Toby and everyone, a HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Pickin’ Up The Pieces……..
I’ve been off line for over a week-medical stuff and other non movie
distractions and I’ve been catching up with the great conversations on
this blog.
Firstly,I have many Imprint (Australia) Blu Ray’s and they are far and away
my favourite re-issue label and ALL of their Blu Ray’s are region free.
I too have been eyeing their forthcoming THE HUNTER which gets lots of
flak especially from Mr Maltin but I feel it’s a pretty good movie although
Steve looks nothing like Papa Thorson.
I guess Steve felt he was none too well while making the movie I
remember him saying to Ben Johnson “Ben,I feel this is the last show
we are going to do together.”
Warner’s are dragging their heels regarding a TOM HORN Blu Ray which
again Mr Maltin hates but I feel is a very underrated Western.
For me at least THE HUNTER and TOM HORN are fine as Steve’s swan
song and it’s a great shame he was not making these types of films during
his long lay off after The Towering Inferno.
What I love about Imprint is their sensational restorations of obscure
B Movies like FACE BEHIND THE MASK,FIVE and their recent OUTRAGE
from a brand new 2K scan supplied by Paramount.
OUTRAGE,of course is more than a B Movie as relevant today as back in
1950.
I’m on a real Mala Powers kick right now Imprint’s lovely restoration of
THE UNKNOWN TERROR is jaw dropping I wonder if other RegalScope
films Paramount own (certainly STAGECOACH TO FURY) are in such
good shape. As Kim Newman correctly mentions on the commentary is
that RegalScope’s few Horror/Sci Fi output were squarely aimed
at adults (SHE DEVIL,KRONOS,BACK FROM THE DEAD)
I’d love a 2.35 high def version of Mala’s other RegalScope title the
superior little Western STORM RIDER.
When Mala’s career descended into B Movies,at least they were good ones
like DEATH AND SMALL DOSES and THE COLOSSOS OF NEW YORK.
I’d love Imprint to release THECOLOSSOS OF NEW YORK double billed
with THE SPACE CHILDREN as it was paired in the UK.
Jack Arnold’s pacifist Sci Fi is certainly worth another look especially in
all of it’s Vista Vision high def glory.
I might mention Mala had a good role in Sierra Baron and yes the French
Blu Ray was horrific and Amazon France kindly refunded my cost.
Let’s hope ’22 is a better year for us all at least Toby’s lovely blog certainly
helps to keep the blues at bay!
John k,I didn’t realise that Ben Johnson was in THE HUNTER ,although I don’t know how big his part is.There is an interview with him on the web.He seemed like a really down to earth guy.
Backtracking on Walter and Vincent’s Lesley Selander conversations, the
Selander that I would love to get released is THE YELLOW TOMAHAWK.
Sadly a black & white version is all that’s available yet Bob Furmanek
states that a master color neg is still lying in the vaults.
Apart from anything else THE YELLOW TOMAHAWK has great early roles
for Lee Van Cleef and Rita Moreno.
Kino Lorber are soon to release the Godawful GOD’S GUN which not only
trashes the reputation of Cleef but also Jack Palance and Richard Boone,
the latter appears to be totally drunk (understandably) in his few scenes in
this disaster.
Apart from being a far superior movie THE YELLOW TOMAHAWK has
a great cast including Rory Calhoun,Peggie Castle,Noah Beery,Warner
Anderson, and graphic combat scenes. The climatic duel between Cheyenne
Warrior (Lee Van Cleef armed with a Winchester) and Calhoun (armed with
a bow & arrow) is really something.
Why there is a bigger market for drek like GOD’S GUN as opposed to
THE YELLOW TOMAHAWK is depressing to say the least.
There’s another interesting Australian label called Umbrella which are releasing
some great double bills. Their Blu Ray’s are region B locked and their
Western releases seem to be DVD only.
Umbrella have been releasing some interesting Blu Ray double bills
of Universal Fifties Sci Fi…I’ve recommended that they release an
Edward Dein double THE LEECH WOMAN/CURSE OF THE UNDEAD
let’s see what happens.
Hi John, It’s good news that a print of The yellow Tomahawk in colour does exist. Too bad no TV channel would at least show it.
I believe that part of the REGALSCOPE films are owned by Fox. One I particaly liked is The Black whip (1956) despite being in a panned & scanned version.
The Black Whip is really good. I really love Stagecoach To Fury and Frontier Gun. The Quiet Gun’s real good, too.
Happy New Year !
