Thanks Toby. Chatting with John was a wonderful experience. Let’s hope that this podcast will help to make Alfred L. Werker more famous !
I am sure many people will want to watch The Last posse after hearing John.
Thanks so much Vincent for allowing me to contribute to your podcast.
I hope anyone who listens to it has as much fun as I did recording it.
Thanks Toby for bringing it to your wonderful blog,I’m humbled to say the least.
That was really enjoyable – well done both of you.
How great! Can’t wait to listen. (Plus it will be fun to hear your voice, John!)
Best wishes,
Laura
John K, BRAVO! You did good. I thoroughly enjoyed your Podcast with Cole Armin(Vincent). It was really informative and a fun listen. I think western fans will enjoy this, and as a result seek out these Alfred Werker Westerns. I’ve liked THE LAST POSSE(1953), and think it is a gem, ever since I first saw it on TV back in the 1960’s.
Thanks so much Colin,Laura and Walter.
I note with interest that Laura and her Husband have a forthcoming podcast
on Lone Pine which I cannot wait to hear.,
Yes,Laura it will be fun to finally hear your voice,my voice certainly sounds
a lot more creaky since I last heard it. 🙂
John K, you are most welcome and thank you to Vincent(Cole Armin) for making the Podcast possible.
I look forward to Laura and her husband’s Lone Pine Podcast.
Thanks John for your podcast on Westernmovies. Bravo.
Thank you all for you kind words and thanks to John K for making that possible 🙂
Wow! What a delight. Getting to listen to Cole and JohnK shoot the bull! Learned quite a bit here. And what an absolutely marvelous topic… Alfred K. Werker! A name I always seem to recall fondly, as it’s associated with so many films I’ve liked from long ago…”At Gunpoint,” “The Last Posse,” “Advs. of Sherlock Holmes,” “He Walked by Night,” etc.
Werker’s 1930s output tends to be on the rare side. I very much like “Last of the Duanes” (1930-Fox), but the film suffers from a chunk of missing footage in the surviving print, affecting continuity/flow. Two other Werker titles I’ve viewed in recent times includes “We Have Our Moments” (1937-Univ), a modest but breezy comedy with an appealing premise that perks up considerably towards the end when Mischa Auer (who can run hot or cold) appears as a loopy French detective. The other film “Big Town Girl” (1937-Fox), with the always-reliable Claire Trevor, was undermined a bit by its script, which couldn’t make up its mind on how serious or how wacky it wanted to be. And some coincidences in the plot ultimately did it in. Looked nice visually, though. Anyway, I think Werker is definitely a name that merits more looking into, and it was really terrific for him to get a podcast spotlight!
Very nice, John. Hoped you would spend more time on Repeat Performance, but not a western. Too bad.
Thanks so much Chip and Bert for the kind words-I would also like to
check out some of Werker’s earlier films.
Barry I did not focus too much on REPEAT PERFORMANCE as I’ve only
seen a horrendous transfer from TV via VHS not the best way to view any
film, also it was a long time ago-but even from that terrible copy I could see
the film was something special. I understand a restored version has been available on TCM USA but sadly I have not seen that.
As I mentioned in the podcast I hope that a restored version will be
available on Blu Ray-I would buy that in a heartbeat.
BTW Barry, belated Birthday wishes for yesterday-I hope that you had a good one.
John, about my birthday, it was the best, and thank you. As for Repeat Performance, I either believe or simply hope that the Eddie Muller variation will be commercially released. That would make some sense. Sadly, for me, Eddie is not a turn-on.
Hi everyone! REPEAT PERFORMANCE is definitely due to come out as a Flicker Alley Film Noir Foundation/UCLA restoration release…it was pushed back due to some legal issues, if I remember correctly, and then COVID, but it’s coming…hopefully later this year.
FYI They also have an “Argentinian noir” restoration or two in the works for Flicker Alley.
Happy Birthday Barry!!!!!!!
Best wishes,
Laura
Laura, I am always happy to support Flicker Alley and thank you for the update, plus the birthday wishes. So far, this has been one of the best.
Barry, HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES! I know that I got in late, but I hope you have a good year.
Walter, knowing you and everyone else, makes every day better, and it is pretty good thus far.
Barry, hope you had a wonderful birthday .What day in April was it?Mine is the 3rd .
And to you, Graham and April is not the cruelest month, huh?
Barry, for me it’s a popular month. Both my brother and sister in law,my twins are April babies. My new Grandchild is also due this month.
Hi Laura,
That’s wonderful news regarding REPEAT PERFORMANCE a film that
deserves to be far better know-I don’t know Flicker Alley, though, and I
thought the film might be released by Classicflix as were other Eagle Lion
classics in beautiful transfers.
So many great releases happening these days it’s hard to keep up with them
all and I’m pleased to see Warner Archive still going so strong although I
understand some of the key players no longer work at the archive.
One things for sure it’s fine that we got all those wonderful Allied Artists Westerns when we did-someone at the archive sure loved those films-I think
most AA titles Warners hold have now been released.
Hi John!
Flicker Alley has done pricey but beautiful Blu-ray/DVD combo releases of other UCLA/FNF restorations: TOO LATE FOR TEARS, WOMAN ON THE RUN, and THE MAN WHO CHEATED HIMSELF. They are Criterion-type releases with commentary tracks, featurettes, and glossy photo booklets. I’m sure the final product for REPEAT PERFORMANCE will be fantastic.
It’s really sad that all the key players have been let go from the Warner Archive, although I understand founder George Feltenstein will be consulting. I’ve been told by one of the former WAC people that most of the 2021 release schedule has been planned out for months. We’ll see what happens after that.
Although I am thoroughly enjoying the gorgeous WAC Blu-ray reissues, I do feel sad that they have stopped releasing all but reissue DVDs and left the Archive’s original mission of making everything in the library available. There are so many hard-to-find titles in their library which haven’t had a release — but like you, I’m very thankful for the great Westerns releases they did!!
Best wishes,
Laura
Hi Laura,
Thanks for the update on Flicker Alley and it’s wonderful that REPEAT
PERFORMANCE will be handled by a quality label. I don’t mind higher
prices if the end result is a quality release.
Warner Archive now do seem to be concentrating on films with A list stars and
I’m very excited about ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO and THEY WON’T
BELIEVE ME-I’ve just received CROSSFIRE and have ordered ISLE OF THE
DEAD and will order EACH DAWN I DIE and DOCTOR X so there’s plenty
for me to be going on with.
I did mention on these pages before Universal releasing TAP ROOTS which
for me was an interesting choice and this new Paramount Presents imprint
sounds most interesting as well. Any catalogue title from a major studio
is always welcome news.
Graham. a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Thank you Walter.
