Olive Films is adding Rio Grande (1950), the third of John Ford’s “Cavalry Trilogy,” to its Signature Edition series. (The first two were Fort Apache and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon.) The release date is listed as November 17.
John Ford did Rio Grande for Republic to get the opportunity to do The Quiet Man (1952), but such dealmaking does not take away from this brilliant movie. The cinematography from Bert Glennon alone is worth the upgrade to Blu-Ray. Essential.
Wonderful! It will look great next to my soundtrack album. Yes, album.
THE ALAN LADD COLLECTION Vol 2 is now on Viavision’s new releases .5 films on 4 DVDs including THE BLACK KNIGHT are on it.It’s a bit pricey at AU$59.95 but hopefully that will be reduced.I’ll be adding it to my collection.
Regarding Rio Grande, I already have the BluRay that was put out by Olive in 2012. This is apparently a “Signature edition” so I’ll have to wait for the reviews to decide if it will be a new purchase.
I do love the movie though – especially Wayne, Ben Johnson, H. Carey jr & Claude Jarman’s contributions to it.
With the Signature Edition of The Night Of The Grizzly, they did further work on the transfer and added lots of extras — making the new version worth the upgrade if you’re a fan of the film (I’m not saying that because I did the new commentary for it). Other Signature stuff from Olive have packed on extras, too, and this Rio Grande has plenty of new stuff.
Toby,I could not see this upgrade of RIO GRANDE on their website or Facebook .Their website appears not to be very up to date.My favourite of the Cavalry trio was FORT APACHE .I love watching the waltz scene in this with the similar music used in THE QUIET MAN and STAGECOACH.John Ford rode John Agar calling him Mr Temple in front of everyone because of his lack of experience.John Wayne took him aside and helped him out .John Agar said he never forgot Wayne’s help and they worked on 5 more films together.
Toby,RIO GRANDE is now on Olive’s Facebook page .This looks good, but they won’t ship to Australia and neither will Amazon .Probably because it’s limited to 3500 copies .I may have to get my niece in NY to send it to me.Just checked out CATLOW 1971 which WB is rereleasing on DVD.Has anyone else seen this? The trailer looks good.
I do have the SE of Night of the Grizzly – which I’ll watch one of these days. And I’m a big fan of your commentaries. Lots of interesting detail. I did buy the Signature Edition off High Noon – I bet I’ve owned 6 versions of that movie if we start with VHS & end with the original Olive Blu Ray & then the SE.
But nothing on a Wild Bill Elliott blu ray release. Wyoming, The Fabulous Texan, Plainsman and the Lady would all go and sell big time. Add Hellfire, not to forget his outstanding work with Little Beaver in the Red Ryder series.
Barry,I love those Bill Elliot films ,and last night I played THE LONGHORN and WACO .A BLU RAY collection of his films would be welcome including his hard to find films.
