Western fans and Peckinpah nuts have spent decades debating the merits of Major Dundee (1965). Nowadays, we also debate the merits of one DVD or Blu-Ray release of the picture over the other. It’s coming in a nice new set from Imprint out of Australia in October.
For me, the participation of Mr. Glenn Erickson puts an immediate Seal Of Approval on anything to do with Major Dundee. It’s his favorite movie, he’s certainly an authority on it (along with lots of other movies), and he’s a really nice guy. Nick Redman and Paul Seydor are also represented.

That’s a lot of stuff. I’m getting really excited about this one. Not sure what the Region info is on it.
UPDATE (8/4/2020): The word is, Imprint Blu-Rays are Region Free.
I just found out that all Imprint releases are region free.
Thanks for solving that mystery!
This certainly looks like the ultimate package and a must buy for me, though I’ve heard shipping from Australia can be real expensive and orders may take up to 3 months to arrive.
Richard ,I’m from Australia and it can be expensive getting things from overseas because some sellers only offer insured mail in case it goes astray or gets damaged.Waiting time for things is usually a couple of weeks depending if they send it by air or sea,but it has improved to what it was when this Covid thing started.I am still waiting on an order from Sweden, because the Swedish mail is still not shipping to certain countries including mine, but this item is very hard to get , so I’ll just have to wait.If you look at Imprint’s Covid update they are still shipping but I have tried ringing them a couple of times with no luck.Melbourne, where they are based are in stage 4 lockdown until about mid September.I am still tossing up whether to get this because I already have the German release.
Exactly right; the participation of Mr. Glenn Erickson does put an immediate seal of approval on Major Dundee. I expect this will be the final & definitive version of a very special, if flawed, movie.
Toby’s the whole show today over at Glenn’s Cinesavant.
I always find Glenn’s blog and Gary’s DVD Beaver the ultimate guide as
to what looks great in high def and what does not.
Gary’s another Toby fan I might add!
Walter,
RUN FOR COVER was released on Blu Ray by Olive Films.
There are so many of us that long for LAST TRAIN FROM GUN HILL
on Blu Ray-now Paramount are releasing vintage titles agai; here’s hoping.
Could not agree more how sensational VistaVision films look on Blu Ray.
Glenn’s comments were so nice, I’m a bit embarrassed. Glenn’s Cinesavant is the bar I reach for, so it sure made me feel good.
VistaVision and Technirama are so perfect for Blu-Ray. And you’re probably all tired of me whining about no Last Train From Gun Hill on Blu-Ray.
Could not have happened to a nicer guy!
Sidonis Calysta have a number of westerns on BLU RAY.THE BRAVADOS comes with a DVD,BLU RAY and MEDIABOOK .COUNT THREE AND PRAY comes in either DVD or BLU RAY format. The reason I mention this is because I have the US release BLU RAY and you cannot rewind back to a scene because that function is not working.
The French Western Site http://www.westernmovies.fr
has just reviewed the Sidonis Blu Ray of HANGMAN’S KNOT
They seem to class it as just a cleaned up version of the old DVD not
a new high def master.
The cover art though is very nice.
Even better is the artwork for the Sidonis version of FLAME OF BARBARY
COAST it is beautiful.
Both releases do not have forced subs.
APACHE 1954 starring Burt Lancaster to be released by Kino Lorber soon. They don’t say if it’s a BLU RAY and no extras listed yet, just taken from a brand new master .
Graham, hopefully APACHE(filmed in 1953, released 1954) will be from a good new master.
I’ve always liked this movie, because of the performance of Burt Lancaster as Massai. I think it is Lancaster that makes this “message movie” worth watching. I also think that good ole reliable John McIntire, as scout Al Sieber, gives a good performance.
This Hecht-Lancaster production is loosely based on Paul I. Wellman’s Historical Novel, BRONCHO APACHE(1936), which is based on fact as well as fiction.
In my opinion APACHE is worth watching and BRONCHO APACHE is worth a read.
Probably the last great movie star from the 1930’s has passed: Olivia de Havilland . *…for, being in, perhaps, the most beautifully acted ‘last goodbye scenes’ in the history of the movies–farewell to Errol Flynn’s General Custer, in the Warner Bros. epic THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON (1941). R.I.P. to our Dear Olivia.
Stevens733, I agree with you regarding Olivia de Havilland. She was very talented, beautiful, and a great movie star. We will always have her magnificent screen presence to watch and enjoy.
The “Goodbye Scene,” which became their farewell scene, was beautifully acted by both de Havilland and Flynn. The touching farewell dialogue in THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON(1941) is much different from the final draft of the original screenplay written by Wally Kline and Aeneas MacKenzie. Sixty-two years later de Havilland wrote in 2003, “I do not…recall improvising the dialogue on the set—but rewriting certainly must have taken place somewhere and I strongly suspect the main work was done by Lenore Coffee—with, possibly, contributions from [director Raoul] Walsh, Flynn, and myself.”
Lenore J. Coffee, uncredited for additional dialogue in the movie, did her homework. What the original scene lacked and writer Coffee put in, was taken from primary source material, which was from BOOTS AND SADDLES, OR, LIFE IN DAKOTA WITH GENERAL CUSTER(1885) written by Elizabeth “Libbie” Custer.
Little did they know, but this was to be the last movie that Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn would do together. This makes the “Farewell Scene” even more touching in finality.
OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND R.I.P.
Walter! Thanks for that story on the story; all new to me. I STILL cannot hold back a tear (or two!) every time I watch that scene. Max Steiner’s music really hits the nerve there for background, of course!
Stephen, your welcome. THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON is a CLASSIC.
