John Ericson
(September 25, 1926 – May 3, 2020)
John Ericson didn’t make a lot of movies (there’s tons of TV), but he’s in some really good ones, especially when it comes to 50s Westerns — John Sturges’ Bad Day At Black Rock (1955), The Return Of Jack Slade (1955), Sam Fuller’s Forty Guns (1957, above), Day Of The Badman (1958) and Paul Landres’ Oregon Passage (1958). He has passed away at 93.
Ericson’s probably best known by folks today for TV’s Honey West (1965) with Ann Francis. Worth looking for is Pretty Boy Floyd (1960), a cheap entry in the late-50s, early-60s run of gangster bios. It’s no Baby Face Nelson (1957), but it’s well worth your time.
Thanks to Walter for the tip.
Very sad news, Toby, but 93 is a very long life. I remember seeing him in GREEN FIRE; BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK and OREGON PASSAGE when I was a youngster in the 1950s and when I realise that now, at 73, I was only twenty years younger than him and that I saw him on the screen when he was a young man, I suddenly feel rather old myself. Rest In Peace, John Ericson.
Sorry to hear about John Ericson. So soon after James Drury.
Being a cowboy and Western fanatic I do remember this wonderful actor. Never made it into the golden boot but he instilled in my heart. Rip. Howard. hfmcompanyinc@aol.com ♥️
Very aware of this wonderful actor. Never had the pleasure of meeting him nor was he a golden boot receiver or presenter. Rip. Howard. hfmcompanyinc@aol.com ♥️
Sure wish we could get “The Return of Jack Slade” (1955) on blu. I saw Ericson at an event one time in the early-1990s, but I didn’t recognize him, as he had a long, gray beard. Someone told me it was him, as he walked by, and it took a few moments for it all to click for me, as I still always envisioned him as that ‘young, full-of-angst actor’ I’d seen on film and tv so many times. Always liked him. Particularly recall him in a good filmed-in-Texas episode of “Route 66” which also featured Marion Ross and DeForest Kelley, if I recall correctly.
” the return of Jack Slade ” (1955) and ” Jack Slade ” (1953) on DVD. i have a dream….
R.I.P. John Ericson.
Hi Bert……..
RETURN OF JACK SLADE on Blu Ray day one purchase as far
as I’m concerned.
Such a shame that RETURN OF JACK SLADE is one of those
Lindsay Parsons/Allied Artists titles owned by Paramount not
Warners.
Other Paramount owned Parsons/Allied titles include JACK SLADE,
DRAGOON WELLS MASSACRE and FINGER MAN all of which I
would snap up on Blu..
I note from the Powerhouse/Indicator website that their
Boetticher/Scott box set has now sold out.
Those lucky enough to have got it now have a collector’;s item and
already the price is racing up on Amazon.
I understand Indicator will at a later stage release the films as stand alone
releases-at any rate it’s encouraging that the Boetticher set has sold out
faster than some of the Hammer sets.
