Jacques Tourneur’s post-Civil War picture Great Day In The Morning (1956) is coming to Blu-Ray from Warner Archive in November. Whether it’s morning or not depends on where you are in the world, but another Tourneur Western in high-definition makes for a great day indeed! The Superscope, Technicolor cinematography by William Snyder is incredible. This somewhat overlooked picture comes highly recommended.
This followed Tourneur’s better-known Westerns Stranger On Horseback and Wichita, both with Joel McCrea and both released in 1955. It’d be great to see those get a Blu-Ray release, too!
I contacted Warner Archive a couple of years back,or so and they
stated GREAT DAY IN THE MORNING needed considerable restoration
work…I’m thrilled this is going to be a Blu Ray release.
According to Home Theatre Forum this release will be in the 2.0 ratio
and also includes four of Tourneur’s MGM shorts.
The print that shows on UK TV (4×3 and extremely faded) is unwatchable.
This release gives great hope for the other RKO Westerns Warners are
working on which, hopefully will also be Blu Ray editions.
DEVIL’S CANYON,TENSION AT TABLE ROCK,TREASURE OF PANCHO
VILLA.
Yep! Toby, WICHITA on Blu Ray would be sensational!
Superscope can look pretty ugly, but Invasion Of The Body Snatchers from Olive was terrific, so I’m really stoked about this one.
Man, I’d love to see Table Rock or Pancho Villa make it to Blu-Ray!
Oddly enough there’s nothing on the blurb on Blu Ray.Com
about the source elements like there usually are i.e. “Brand New 2019
Restoration” or New 4K Restoration From Original Negative”
This suggests that the elements Warner Archive are working from may
not be the best, however I’m sure this release will be a vast improvement
over anything else that’s out there.
The fact that it’s a Blu Ray release suggest that it must look pretty good,
otherwise we would have only got a DVD version.
Off topic, but knowing that you are a big Peter Cushing fan both Cinesavant
and DVD Beaver have given rave reviews to Indicator’s forthcoming
TIME WITHOUT PITY. This crackerjack little British thriller was a
breakthrough movie for Joseph Losey and was Cushing’s last film before
reinventing himself as an all time great Horror star.
I often wonder how Cushing’s career would have progressed had Hammer
never happened-as a top flight character actor in films like TIME WITHOUT
PITY I guess.
I’ve been happy with every Warner Archive Blu-Ray I’ve seen, so I’m going to trust that they found some nice stuff to work with. If they saw The Thing as a bit compromised, I think this’ll be a nice disc.
I wanna see Time Without Pity. It sounds great. I’m guessing you’re right, Cushing would’ve plowed on as a top-notch character actor, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Of course, I’m so glad (for my own sake) that his career went in the direction it did.
