Directed by Fred F. Sears
Starring Rory Calhoun, Susan Cummings, Angela Stevens, Max Baer, Ray Teal
Sidonis out of France has announced the upcoming DVD (only) release of Utah Blaine (1957), a picture that brings together Rory Calhoun, producer Sam Katzman and director Fred F. Sears to bring a Louis L’Amour novel to the screen. By the way, Angela Stevens was in a number of Katzman pictures, including Creature With The Atom Brain and the Jungle Jim movie Devil Goddess (both 1955).
Calhoun made a number of pictures for Columbia, often having a hand in the production himself. This was his only time working with Jungle Sam’s unit — cats like Fred Sears and DP Benjamin Kline who take the finished picture far beyond what Katzman had in his budget. Of late, Sidonis has stayed clear of the forced (as in you can’t get rid of ’em) subtitles that plagued some of their earlier DVDs. This should be 1.85, and I’m looking forward to seeing it again. Coming in September.
UPDATE: Word is, the subtitles can be removed.
Thanks to John Knight for the reminder.
Great news. The first official release of this movie, other editions are sure to follow too.
One of my absolute favourite ‘smaller budget’ westerns of the 50s and one of Rory’s very best, l feel.
This is great news as I hope it will spark a North American release. I love this movie – and while I keep adding technology in terms of my display I still lack a region free player so I need to wait for a subsequent release.
Good news .I will be ordering a copy of this when it gets released.Good news also about the forced subs.I bought a copy of DRAGOON WELLS MASSACRE from Spain .I should have known better .My DVDr copy is better then this.
I have good and bad news from Sidonis .They say they can release UTAH BLAINE with the English track with French Subtitles .This is by contract with the studios but they don’t say if they can be removed .I am guessing they are forced ,but as I have mentioned previously ,I do have a couple of their releases without forced subs.
Now the good news .I inquired about COUNT THREE AND PRAY and they said the quality of the master is top and the format will be correct .
You can also stream Utah Blaine in HD on iTunes, Amazon Prime and Vudu.
Graham,
On the latest spate of Sidonis releases they have stopped having
forced French subs;I hope this practice continues.
The artwork is up on http://www.westernmovies.fr perhaps Cole can provide a
link-it’s fine to see the great Ray Teal get mentioned on the cover.
In the forum section it’s mentioned that THE LAW VS BILLY THE KID
might be a future release,if so that’s great,as these William Castle/Katzman
Westerns go,this one’s right at the top of the tree.
Super news about COUNT THREE AND PRAY especially in the correct
ratio.
I’m also hoping for a release of DOMINO KID with a wonderful array of
great character actors in bit parts.
Recommended viewing for anyone who considers Ray Nazarro just a
“hack” director.
Graham, some time back Sidonis did release ALVAREZ KELLY without
forced subs and it’s a lovely transfer.
John k,I just received an email from my previous contact at Sidonis and he informs me they are releasing BLU RAYs of HIGH NOON and RIO GRANDE in the coming month.THE DOMINO KID is one I’ve never seen before ,but Rory Calhoun usually puts in a good performance.
For those interested Gary of DVD Beaver has just reviewed Kino’s
new Blu Ray of THUNDER BAY.
Although not totally knocked out by the picture quality (yet more problems
with vintage Universal titles) Gary finds Toby’s commentary of the usual
high quality. Gary is quiet rightly amused by Toby’s comments on Joanne
Dru’s jeans being “too tight in the rear end” which the suits at Universal
found might be too much of a distraction!
Gary’s review is well worth reading with a generous amount of screen grabs-
the widescreen framing makes all the difference.
Kino Lorber have just announced a 3-D Restoration by 3-D Film Archive of TAZA ,SON of COCHISE 1954 coming early 2020.
