My favorite of all the cars I’ve owned was my 1971 Volkswagen Type 3 Fastback. It was so much fun to drive, and Jennifer and I went on dates in it.
Seeing this picture today of John Wayne in a VW Squareback, the wagon version of the car I had, blew my away. Now, more than ever, I want another Type 3.
Get this, when I looked up VW/Porsche dealer Chick Iverson (of Newport Beach), I saw that he’s buried next to John Wayne. They were the best of friends.
Thanks to Jennifer for finding this.
I am always intrigued by the footwear selected by “macho” type actors for their private leisure. Wayne’s footwear looks like simple, basic Keds. A photo on display at Malabar Farm shows Bogart wearing espadrilles sandals with cord ties that wrapped up around his ankles. Obviously these men’s onscreen macho images weren’t threatened by their less than macho real life footwear. Good for them! Chick Iverson must have sold a doozie of a car deal to someone to have snagged that final parking spot!
Very cool.
Off topic…….well,sort of…….
While Western releases in the Home Nation seem to have virtually
dried up,as Horror/Sci Fi fans are having a bonanza as never before
(check out the latest at The Guv’nor’s Hannibal 8) it’s Germany and France
where it’s at these days.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment,Germany have just announced a
set of 9 Paramount Westerns (9 films on 3 Blu Ray’s)
I guess Universal distribute Paramount titles in Germany, whatever the case
may be,as far as I can tell (and please correct me if I’m wrong) 4 of the 9
titles are making their Blu Ray debut.
Of the titles already out on Blu
HONDO
MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE
EL DORADO
TRUE GRIT
GUNFIGHT AT OK CORRAL
Those making their Blu Ray debut on this set
SONS OF KATIE ELDER
THREE VIOLENT PEOPLE
HUD
POSSE
The even better news is that this set is noted as Volume 1
If future volumes include some of the A.C.Lyles Westerns then a lot of us are
going to be very happy!
The set is expected to market at around 30 Euros but I note one German
dealer is offering this set at a mere 18 Euros.
An interesting site for forthcoming German releases-just google
bluray-disc.de-kalender.
John k.does this collection have a title .I just bought the US release called CLASSIC WESTERN COLLECTION with 9 films .4 of the films that you list are on mine, including JOHNNY RENO which is about the only officially released AC.LYLES film on DVD.As much as I like John Wayne ,over half of those BLU RAY films are his .A couple of years ago I bought a collection called THE ULTIMATE WESTERN COLLECTION from the US with 6 films. It got released in Australia with 8 films ,exactly the same cover but some of the films were not on the Australian release and vice versa.
It’s hard to believe they still haven’t gotten around to Katie Elder. Good to see it on the way.
Hi Graham,
The title is “9 MOVIE WESTERN COLLECTION”
You can view the artwork here:
uphe.universalpictures.de
There is a search facility on the site and you can view an enlarged version
of the artwork.
No,I cannot believe that they have not gotten around to Katie Elder-
furthermore the titles POSSE and HUD make this set very attractive.
HUD,I believe was shot in 2.35 widescreen by the great James Wong Howe
who considered this film his finest work.
Just found out that Jan-Michael Vincent passed away apparently on 10th February this year.He was in AIR WOLF with Ernest Borgnine ,THE MECHANIC with Charles Bronson ,THE UNDEFEATED with John Wayne and BIG WEDNESDAY with Hank Worden.
RIP Jan-Michael Vincent 1944-2019.
Jan was in Bite The Bullet, which despite Vincent Canby’s crummy review, had many moments of truth and charm, most of which captured by Gene Hackman and James Coburn. Jan was just fine in it.
Hello Barry,
There’s a very sad obit for Jan over at Jeff Wells’ Hollywood-Elsewhere-
as Jeff says…what a waste.
I best remember Jan in WHITE LINE FEVER which also co starred
Slim Pickens,L.Q.Jones,R.G.Armstrong and Dick Miller.
If you should care to visit and scroll back a page (sorry Barry I’m useless
at providing links….paging Mike Richards) there is a link to the recent
Peter Bogdanovich interview on Vulture.com from 3.4.19
I thought of you when I read this as it’s not only a tale of Hollywood excess
but Bogdanovich also says not so kind things about a certain Hollywood
director that you were less than kind about over at Margot’s recently.
At any rate I think you will enjoy reading it-sorry I cannot supply
a proper link….Luddite that I am.
John, copy the web site link by highlighting it, then paste to your comment. It should then stay as a direct link to the web site you want readers to see. Well, that’s how l do it.
OK John, shoot me!!
As Clint says in THE MULE when the cartel guys ask him to
text them a bemused Clint says “Text???”
I’m pretty much the same with “paste”….sorry you’re in
Hardcore Ludditesville here Mike.
John,
I have read the article, and appreciate being directed towards it. Now you know why Cary Grant never worked for that asshole Billy Wilder. Grant, by the way, is the only person who comes across decently, and with smarts. My take, if you like someone on screen, they are probably okay in person, and you will like them if you get the chance close up. I am working with Robert Westbrook, Sheilah Graham’s son, who wrote wonderful book about his mother and F. Scott Fitzgerald called Intimate Lies. Tried to interest Peter, and did not get anywhere, now I understand. In summation, anyone want to argue with me about Billy, go knock yourself out; bang your head against a wall.
Hugh Hefner, as Peter covers him. All true. Friends of mine, a married couple, who worked on staff and freelance for Playboy understood, and a accepted, that sleeping with Hef was part of the deal. Personally, I always went for the pseudo-dirty pictures and most interviews. The rest of it was for pretentious teenagers.
Barry…it was sort of a long shot,but I thought
the Bogdanovich interview would interest you,
and it has.
Over at Margot’s you deconstructed Wilder the artist
and very well put,I thought.
The Bogdanovich interview concentrates on Wilder
the person and at times it’s disturbing reading,to say
the least.
I too was very taken by the Grant comment.
An unrealised Bogdanovich project was a Western teaming
Wayne,Stewart and Fonda, all three turned it down agreeing
that “they are trying to make us out as old fogies”
Perhaps the script could be re-worked to star Eastwood,
Costner,Tommy Lee Jones and Duvall.
Those four in a Western would certainly bring it back with a
bang!
Mike, thanks so much for providing the link.
I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in Volume 2 of this Universal/Paramount
set. I guess in Germany Universal handle Paramount’s catalogue titles
and possibly the reason they are releasing Paramount sets is because
Universal themselves have so many on-going deals with European labels.
I should imagine most,if not all the titles in these Blu Ray sets will be films
already released on DVD.
If a Lyles title is included,I should imagine it will only be JOHNNY RENO.
There are however some Paramount titles that I’d love to see on Blu Ray
especially LAST TRAIN FROM GUN HILL and NEVADA SMITH.
I would be very surprised if these films do not appear on Volume 2.
Furthermore there are some excellent (when Paramount still released Westerns)
Paramount previously released Westerns that I’d love to see get a Blu Ray
upgrade.
COPPER CANYON,BRANDED,THE LONELY MAN,THE TIN STAR.
Here’s hoping. Although I’m not exactly in love with the film I’d still go
for a high-def upgrade of ARROWHEAD which I’m sure will feature
on a future set.
I’m not holding out any hope for the much sought after THE DESERTER
which was a Dino De Laurentiis production and I guess “rights” issues are
involved as this film has not even had a DVD release.
John k,THE DESERTER is a film that I’m after as well.It did have a DVD release on EL PASO films in Australia who release a lot of public domain films ,but it has now been deleted .I too would like to see DRAGOON WELLS MASSACRE on BLU RAY let alone a proper DVD release.
Is there nothing Horror fans will not buy………….
Kino have just announced BILLY THE KID VS DRACULA and the cats
on Kino’s Facebook page are already going bananas!
Me,I’d rather see DRAGOON WELLS MASSACRE on Blu Ray but there you go.
I saw a 4 x 3 print of Billy the Kid vs. Dracula on TCM, a few years back. I’d always wanted to see it, but it’s disappointing, it feels and looks like a TV movie. The great Carradine looks lost. Maybe HD widescreen will improve, but I’m not excited about it.

Bogdanovitch interview was really crazy! He obviously hates Cher simply because she wouldn’t sleep with him (made oh so apparent when B says C “hates all men”🤪). I guess the last thing to go is the male ego! Bogdanovitch also misidentifies the casting couch as film romances! These wannabe actresses slept with him because he was so, oh I don’t know… magnetic! 😂😂. LOVED the bit about Orson Welles’s two letters to him. Well worth reading to give insight into a guy who represents a lot of those creepy director/producer types… Cary Grant comes off as roses, per usual. Thank you for sharing the link.
Bogdanovich is great at talking to actors and directors, and I thank God for all those interviews and books.
As a director, he’s a bit frustrating to me. What’s Up, Doc? is a family favorite, while others I haven’t cared for. And I have no interest in his personal life.
I was a bit wary about the digression over to the Bogdanovich
interview, say what you will it’s pretty compulsive reading and seems
to have generated some discussion, which is always good.
Other contenders for Volume 2 of the Universal/Paramount Westerns
set would be WILL PENNY and SEVEN MEN FROM NOW the latter
originally a Warner Bros picture, now owned by Paramount.
Serial Squadron’s Blu-ray of GHOST OF ZORRO appears to be delayed though still in the works. It looks like they will be doing a Blu-ray of the 1950 serial DESPERADOES OF THE WEST first.
