Directed by George Sherman
Starring Joel McCrea, Yvonne De Carlo, Pedro Armendáriz, Howard Petrie
There’s a company in France called ESC Editions, and they’ve started announcing some upcoming Universal Westerns on Blu-Ray. One of those is George Sherman’s Border River (1954), one of the six terrific Westerns Joel McCrea made for Universal. The comments around here have been buzzing about this thing, and for good reason — to have these coming to high-definition is a big deal.
I’ll post more information — aspect ratio, region, etc. — as it’s verified.
There are so many really good Universal and Universal-International Westerns out there, that I hope the buzz keeps buzzing and I hope someone at ESC Editions would read the FIFTIES WESTERNS blog. How about Audie Murphy?
“BORDER RIVER” is terrific! My favorite of his U-I WESTERNS, for sure. Alfonso Bedoya has another one of his wild character roles. Great on location scenery serves up 80 1 /2 MINUTES of a great little ’50’s TECHNICOLOR WESTERN , one of the better, ‘upper-shelf’ pictures from THAT STUDIO, which in this case should have shot this one in CinemaScope! (which debuted the year before in 1953).
Great movie. I bought the remastered version a couple years ago and wondered why I hadn’t heard of it earlier. Excellent high-resolution and color. YDC is fantastic.
I also love this western for its dashing colors (Yvonne de Carlo looks wonderful in Technicolor) and a great duo at its peak. The previous DVDs of the film were fine to me. The Blu-Ray should be even better !
