On December 2, 1958, under the watchful eye of DP Charles Lang, the big VistaVision cameras rolled for Marlon Brando’s One-Eyed Jacks (1961). It would be six full months — June 2, 1959, to be exact — before they stopped. A number of inserts and reshoots came later.
My book on the film isn’t taking quite that long. Not quite, anyway.
Not quite as long as —
Pope Julius II: When will you make an end?
Michaelangelo: When I am finished!
Ha! I have one phone call to make for a possible last interview. After that, the research gate is locked. Otherwise, I’ll just keep digging up stuff until I die!
ONE-EYED JACKS(1958-61) is what first led me to Toby’s FIFTIESWESTERNS site. That was in 2012 and I have been a reader ever since. I didn’t do any commenting at the time because I was swamped with work and would be for the foreseeable future.
Toby, I believe in what you are doing with this site and your work journey on the trail of the Western Movies of that great decade and ONE-EYED JACKS. Will the book actually be out by March 30, 2019?
Toby, Thanks.
I think so. The book itself is really close, then there’s proofing and double-checking all the references and stuff.
It was real close a few years ago — until a flood of research stuff came along, which prompted me to dig even deeper into some stuff. So glad I did. It made me look like a flake since it delayed a book I was proclaiming near finished, but it has been worth it. The previous version was embarrassing compared to where it’s at now.
Hope folks will think it’s worth the wait!
I think it will be worth the wait. I look forward to reading A MILLION FEET OF FILM: THE MAKING OF ONE-EYED JACKS(2019).
Really looking forward to reading it. How will copies be available? I live in Raleigh … will you be doing any readings locally?
I’m self-publishing it through Amazon, so that’ll be the best way to get one.
A friend is trying to talk me into doing readings, but I shudder at the thought. Right now, I just wanna get it done!
Quail Ridge Books. Just sayin’.
That’s where my friend wants me to go. I don’t know…
Toby, will you sell the book yourself.Amazon unfortunately does not ship to Australia.
Not sure how, but I will make sure folks can get them wherever. I’ll probably have some on hand to sell myself — if that seems to be easiest.
Bob Emory sez: ”…no more waitin’, and no more takin’ that bull , cause…”! thanks, Toby for your contribution to the re-release of Marlon Brando’s MASTERPIECE. ”ONE EYED JACKS”!
