It took me about two seconds to settle on who to feature for Father’s Day. So, here’s Chuck Connors and Johnny Crawford — as Lucas McCain and his son Mark — in The Rifleman.
Happy Father’s Day.

Lucas boy is a dandy! Happy Father’s Day.
Still think that is one of the absolute best TV westerns. Lovely father-son relationship, played so well.
Thank you Dell Comics for another great cover.
Always remember when celebrating The Rifleman, that this was a Four Star Production. Dick Powell was in charge. Aaron Spelling often said that Mr. Powell opened the door for him as a writer, but after Dick’s death, some ‘genius’ took his name down from the masthead, that was when Aaron split and began his own successful production outfit.
Absolutely, Barry. Four Star Production was a superb outfit (thanks to Dick Powell) and they produced many fine TV series, two of the best IMHO being “THE RIFLEMAN” (of course) and “THE DETECTIVES” with Robert Taylor.
Toby, thank you for the wonderful Dell cover of Chuck Connors and Johnny Crawford as Lucas and Mark McCain. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to one and all.
The French review site DVD Classik have just reviewed
Chuck Connors’ GERONIMO made at the height of his Rifleman
success. Like The Rifleman GERONIMO is yet another product from
the Levy Gardner Laven fun factory.
DVD Classik think the new Blu Ray is pretty good from a new 2K scan-
there are many screen grabs to view.
I will resist the Sidonis version and wait for the German Spirit Media Blu Ray
which is cheaper and no forced subs.
Script is by Pat Fielder a LGL production assistant who convinced the
guys that she could write so they turned her loose on four drive in specials
when they briefly entered that market.
Three of those films are great (THE VAMPIRE,RETURN OF DRACULA and
THE MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD)
Pat also wrote several Rifleman episodes as well as a whole heap of
TV stuff.
Interesting comparison on http://www.westernmovies.fr of Sidonis’ MAN
WITHOUT A STAR Blu Ray. I already have the Explosive Media version
from 2014. which is fine and again no forced subs.
What amazed me was the loss of detail from the “open matte” version
and the new 2.0 widescreen crop..was rather disturbed to see Jeanne
Crain’s black leather gloves get lost in the new widescreen ratio.
Jeanne’s gloves are of course a “power symbol” as she plays one of the most
strident women to grace any Western.
So glad to see you give a mention to Pat Fielder. I’m a huge fan of those monster movie she wrote (even The Flame Barrier).
Her Rifleman and Rebel episodes are very good.
Never seen THE FLAME BARRIER one of the very few 50’s Sci-Fi/
Monster movies I’ve never seen.
BTW great to see you trading licks with Bob Furmanek over at the H8.
The Flame Barrier is an odd mix of science fiction and a jungle picture. The main problem with it is that its tiny budget and short schedule are very apparent. You can tell Paul Landres and his cast did what they could under the circumstances.
I love it when Bob stops by these blogs.
My contact at Sidonis informs me that the first Paramount title to be released will be VILLA RIDES in September.
Well ,I finally joined the Blu Ray club ,reluctantly I might add .I ordered a multiregion model which also plays CDs and records off the TV.It should be delivered to me at the end of the week.My main reason for buying it is because I bought a Superman boxset which is Blu Ray only.I will continue to buy DVDs and will only buy Blu Rays if a really good release comes up.
I see on the Mill Creek Facebook page somebody requested a Blu Ray WILLIAM CASTLE WESTERNS release.Good luck with that.
Congratulations,Graham!
VILLA RIDES was released on Blu Ray by Olive Films some time
ago. It’s pretty good,at least far better than the similar 100 RIFLES.
Look for an unbilled John Ireland cameo at the end of the film-
Mitchum & Ireland were real life buddies.
