Directed by Stuart Heisler
Starring Gary Cooper, Loretta Young, William Demarest, Dan Duryea
ClassicFlix has announced a new remaster of Stuart Heisler’s terrific Western spoof, Along Came Jones (1945). Actually, it’s not so much a spoof of Westerns as it is Gary Cooper poking a little fun at himself. It’s a cool movie, and I’m sure it’ll benefit from the ClassicFlix treatment. They’ve done some terrific stuff so far.
This was shown on UK TV last week, Still a good western comedy with Coop really enjoying himself. Based on the Novel “Useless Cowboy” by Alan LeMay who wrote the classic “The Searchers”
I like the scene in this film when Cooper walks into a saloon looking tough and wants to get past a table with guys playing cards.”Can I get by”he says .When no one answers he kicks the table out of the way.”You fellas ought to let people past when they ask”.Classic Cooper.
I particularly enjoyed both the serious way it began before transitioning to comedy and Loretta Young who I don’t recall from many westerns.
I believe this film is from a novel by Alan Lemay, whom we know best for the Searchers and the Unforgiven,he also wrote several screenplays Rocky Mountain with Errol Flynn for one,Along Cames Jones is a fun movie from his novel Useless Cowboy.
