Rory Calhoun
(August 8, 1922 – April 28, 1999)
Rory Calhoun would be 95 today.
His run of 50s Westerns stands up to about anybody’s. Red Sundown (1956) really knocked me out, but others are just as good — The Silver Whip (1953), Dawn At Socorro (1954), The Hired Gun (1957) and on it goes. He worked with Ray Nazarro a lot, especially when he developed his own films, which guarantees you a pretty solid 80 minutes.
This newspaper piece plugs The Treasure Of Pancho Villa (1955) from George Sherman. Wish Warner Archive or somebody would get around to that one.
A really worthy mention here, Toby. Totally agree with your assessment of Rory as a western star. He was just fine in his TV show, “THE TEXAN”, too. If you wanted straightforward western action, the series didn’t disappoint.
But his films were just among the best to appear in the 50s – and that’s saying something!!
You think it was to be I put a Rory Calhoun western on YouTube not even knowing it was his anniversary today .
God rest his soul
RIP Glen Campbell 1936 – 2017.
I’ve recently shown my daughter a couple of Calhoun pictures. Thought it was time she knew him beyond The Simpsons spoof.
Always nice to see Feg Murray cartoons. I was surprised to see, after checking Amazon, that there are no books of his drawings. There are many single drawings online.
One of the great Western stars, it was always obvious that he put a lot into his portrayals, they way he dressed and wore his guns – that fancy rig with the left hand ‘ 45 – and he wrote the stories for some good films also.
Browsing the web, l have just read that Ty Hardin, Warner TV western star of Bronco has died. Date was August 3 or 4. He was 87 years old. I know his later career was very hit and miss, but he was great as Bronco.
And “BRONCO” was very popular here in the UK, wasn’t it, Mike? And I think with good reason.
Father’s Day in Australia is coming up soon and sometimes the DVD companies
release a western compilation .Will there be any this year?Fingers crossed!!!!
Glad to see a birthday mention for one of my favorite western stars, and he appeared in a number of good or better movies in other genres during his heyday too.
APACHE UPRISING-1965 A.C. Lyles Production with Rory Calhoun, Corinne Calvet , John “Lawman” Russell, and other oldtimers, is on GritTV Monday 1PM to 3PM, EST. It’s available online for pay at various places. (It may be up at youtube under an assumed name.)
I always think I’ve seen this because I confuse it with APACHE TERRITORY.
APACHE UPRISING did have a VHS release from Paramount Home Video.
This ain’t about Rory, but Fred MacMurray. I was very pleasantly surprised to see GRIT TV late last night running AT GUNPOINT. This is a movie I haven’t seen shown anywhere except on Encore Westerns years ago. Unfortunately it was the same version Encore showed, the full screen pan/scan version. I would love to see this one in all it’s cinemascope glory. This one esp. suffers with major parts of the side of the picture cut off, actors are cut off entirely or only 1/2 their face is seen on either side of the screen. You just know this would look great widescreen.
Fantastic, didn’t know this one was there. Hope it stays long enough for me to see it thru.
I have requested AT GUNPOINT from Olive films seeing as they have given us some rare westerns in the past ,They seemed interested .It’s a bit annoying when you already have three releases of this film all with no English.
I see that WB Archive have on their Facebook page THE LAW AND JAKE WADE for a future BLU RAY release .
Laura ,I know that you are a Robert Taylor fan so I would like to recommend THE ROBERT TAYLOR Collection from Impulso Records in Spain.Impulso do some very good transfers and they inform me that they get them direct from the studios. This collection has 5 films ,4 of them westerns .I have had it for a couple of years and I highly recommend it.
Thank you so much! I’ll look it up. Always appreciate tips.
Great to see Rory Calhoun celebrated this month!!!
Best wishes,
Laura
