Word’s out that John Wayne’s last picture, The Shootist (1976), is finally making its way to Blu-ray — from Germany.
Some folks are hard on this movie, but me, I think it’s great. You got John Wayne. You got Don Siegel. It doesn’t get any better than that. Well, there’s my typical complaint about almost any movie: it should’ve had Hank Worden in it. (I wanted a photo of Wayne and Siegel together, but this was as close as I got. And isn’t that poster terrific?)
Thanks to John Knight for the tip.
Terrific poster; terrific film.
agree fanatic film
I gave it a recent re-watch after a great number of years (time flies) and, once again, Duke’s work in this movie thrilled me.
For me, it’s the finest western of the 1970s easily. A wonderful and dignified exit to an amazing career (even if it wasn’t intended to be his exit at the time).
When will CHISUM be released on Blu-Ray? My wife’s favorite movie.
I want CHISUM on blu-ray, too. Not enough of John Wayne in it, but I’m fond of the film. A really good-looking, well-made Hollywood western. After the experience of TRUE GRIT, I made a point of watching every single one of John Wayne’s 1970s films on the big screen multiple times. This one was a family outing at the Centereach Theater on Long Island. It played to packed house of enthusiastic fans. CHISUM is like a place in my life I like to go visit.
You can’t get any better than Duke going up against Palladin & Wyatt Earp at the same time. I love my DVD, “I don’t need no stinkin’ Blu Ray”. (A la Treasure of Sierra Madre Mexican baddie.)
A good movie to end his career with a great supporting cast .
I received my Sidonis copy of GUNFIGHTERS the other day with no forced sub titles .As I mentioned in a previous post ,this is the second release from them I received with no forced subs ,the first being THE SPOILERS with Jeff Chandler ,so I’m not complaining .
Which GUNFIGHTERS? If you are referring to the 1947 film starring Randolph Scott and directed by George Waggner, where’d you get it? Link? I found THE SPOILERS and ordered it.
Well Guys and Gals ,I am going interstate for 2 weeks so I will have a lot of reading to do when I get back unless I get access to a computer in my travels.
Take care everyone and Happy Trails.
THE SHOOTIST is 40 years old this year, and Universal seems to like anniversaries. Maybe a region A release will be announced before this year is up. Let’s hope so. If not I’ll buy the import.
