Directed by Sidney Salkow
Starring George Montgomery, Richard Boone, Sylvia Findley, Peter Graves, Warren Stevens, William Hopper, Leo Gordon
Sure has been a lot of new release stuff turning up lately. And here’s a good one: George Montgomery in Robbers Roost (1955) — coming from Kino Lorber later this year. The DVD from MGM’s MOD program was nice, and I figure this will hail from the same transfer.
Thanks for all the good news, Toby.
This is surely going to be a welcome release for many. One of Montgomery’s best, with a great cast…….
I dunno…I just can’t keep up with such stuff, or maybe I just don’t want to. My MGM made on demand of this movie was outstanding. I was enthralled to see this film in such good condition and thought that it was most certainly the last word, until, of course, now. Do I need to keep upgrading???
No…I’m sticking to my guns. I’m drawing my Alamo stick across dry ground and I for one will not upgrade simply because what I now have is EXCELLENT in quality and I’m VERY happy with the current MGM made on demand product.
Go on, tell me I’m missing some extra digital bite or whatever, I really don’t care. I’m in seventh heaven with my current MGM version of George Montgomery’s best hat ever in any film version…Sorry Blu-ray, but I really don’t need you.
Richard Oravitz , I’m with you on this one .Blu- ray may be a lot better etc, but what I have suits my needs .The only way I’ll give in to Blu-ray is if something that I really, really want comes out in that format and I cant get it any other way .
As for ROBBERS ROOST ,a great George Montgomery western .While I’m talking about George ,I just received a DVDr copy of THE OUTLAW OF RED RIVER .Not one of his best, but hey,I just had to see it.
gcew 1
Yep! THE OUTLAW OF RED RIVER is certainly a low point
as far as George’s Westerns go,the only kind thing I can say about
it is that George looks great in this film, pretty cool outfit too.
I second your comment on the previous thread for DRANGO to
get a DVD release,I’m sure Kino-Lorber will oblige at some point
especially the way that they are going through the United Artists library.
Posted a comment on the Warner Archive Facebook page regarding
the DICK FORAN WESTERN COLLECTION and they say all 12 films
have been remastered.
In the waiting list to be remastered are HEART OF THE NORTH the big
budget,Tecnicolor Dick Foran Mountie Movie.
We can also look forward to some time in the future WILD BILL HICKOK
RIDES with Constance Bennett, and Bruce Cabot.
Also awaiting remastering is ESPIONAGE AGENT a spy drama with
Joel McCrea and Brenda Marshall.
I am very much looking forward to these ultra rare vintage Warner
Brothers productions.
To Blu or not to Blu…………..
I advise anyone considering upgrading their DVD copy to first wait for
DVD Beaver to do a comparison to see it it’s worthwhile.
On some films the difference between the DVD and the Blu is minimal
to say the least.
In other cases the difference is a major upgrade.
The German Blu of FORT MASSACRE and the Aussie Blu of
GUNFIGHT AT DODGE CITY the upgrade is very considerable indeed.
As far as Fifties Westerns go what I love about Blu-Ray is that the art
of the director of photography really shines especially in the interior
scenes. There is just so much more tonal range in naturally lit interiors.
I was knocked out by the recent French Carlotta Blu-Ray of 3.10 TO
YUMA it’s jaw droppingly good.
I thought nothing could top my widescreen DVD of THE BEAST OF
HOLLOW MOUNTAIN but hey,the Blu is a very marked improvement.
Don’t even go there, as to why I much prefer the cheesy (very) sub
Harryhausen effects of TBOHM to today’s CGI.
Ten years ago I would have thought the idea of a film like ROBBERS
ROOST getting a DVD release was pure fantasy
Now I find the idea of George Montgomery in high definition very
appealing,not to mention George,Richard Boone,Peter Graves,
Warren Stevens and Leo Gordon slugging it out in beautiful Durango.
Call me sucker if you will but I guess I,m gonna go for this!
KNM Home entertainment in Germany have released HONDO AND THE APACHES ,but it is German only .There was a 2 MOVIE release from Vintage Home Entertainment which also had THE MAN CALLED NOON ,but going by some of the comments on Amazon the transfers were pretty poor .There was also an earlier release but I don’t know if it was any better .I believe HONDO THE COMPLETE SERIES is available on WB ARCHIVE STREAMING.
I see that 77 SUNSET STRIP is or was on this service .This series was discussed in an earlier blog ,and it was thought that the reason it was not on DVD was because of music and song rights ,so wouldn’t these same rights be an issue with streaming ?
Good news and not so good news .I asked WB archive on Facebook about THE BILL ELLIOT WESTERNS COLLECTION ,HONDO AND THE APACHES and 77 SUNSET STRIP .BILL ELLIOT is nearing completion of mastering and noting to report on HONDO and 77SUNSET STRIP .
Well done for getting that happy piece of news, gcwe1, about the much-awaited Bill Elliott westerns set. Can’t wait to see “TOPEKA” in a perfect print at last.
I see over at DVD Savant Glenn Erickson has noted that
THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE debuts on Blu-Ray in
October.
Mr Erickson notes that while 2003’s THE CORE gets a Blu-Ray
release Paramount’s Fifties Sci-Fi classics like WHEN WORLDS
COLLIDE,WAR OF THE WORLDS and CONQUEST OF SPACE are
yet to debut in hi-def.
