The folks at ClassicFlix let me write for them every once in a while. Here’s a piece on John Ford’s 3 Godfathers (1948), a pre-1950 Christmas Western that I love dearly, no matter how overly sentimental and sappy you might think it is.
It’s also one of the most beautiful color movies ever made. Easy.
Really good piece there Toby, one to be proud of. It’s such a beautiful film, and a great Xmas movie.
Great article about a wonderful movie… and Ben Johnson’s in 3 Godfathers too! 😉
I would just like to hark back to Toby’s May 2012 post on “Hondo” and add my own humble thoughts re John Wayne as an actor. He has always had his detractors (much of it because of his politics which were unfashionable late in his career and to this day) as an actor but when he had the right director he was just great, I think. Obvious choices, such as “Red River”, “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon” & “The Searchers” show an actor of depth with a feel for realism. I also found him excellent in the 1965 film “In Harm’s Way”.
Go right back to his B-westerns for Lone Star and Republic and he was a PRESENCE on the screen, head and shoulders (literally) above everyone else.
Just wanted to add my bit as I have been a Wayne fan for more than 50 years.
