Yvonne DeCarlo made a ton of movies at Universal, from Arabian adventure pictures to, of course, Westerns.
In The Raw Edge (1956), she’s paired with Rory Calhoun, who gave her away at her 1955 Reno wedding to stuntman Bob Morgan in the middle of shooting Shotgun (see inset). That same year, she’d appear as Sephora in The Ten Commandments.
Some of Yvonne’s U-I Westerns are better than others, but you can’t really go wrong with any of them. And while none are available Stateside on DVD, Spain’s doing her proud. Out, or on the way, are Border River (1954) with Joel McCrea, Black Bart (1948, co-starring Dan Duryea and Percy Kilbride) and Calamity Jane And Sam Bass (1949) with Howard Duff. It’s a good start.
Thanks for the Region 2 tip! I taped CALAMITY JANE AND SAM BASS and BLACK BART from Encore, but I would dearly love to see her with McCrea in BORDER RIVER. I’ll watch for it.
I’ve become a fan of hers…one of my favorites is the pirate movie BUCCANEER’S GIRL which is on DVD. Love the anecdote about her wedding!
Best wishes,
Laura
I think I may have mentioned this, but there’s a great little moment in the Selander movie Shotgun where you see DeCarlo nude, in her reflection in the water–it’s the kind of thing that burned fine pin-sized erotic holes in the souls of impressionable boys of a certain age.
In Paris, many years ago, I found a pile of old copies of a magazine, Paris Flash, and one of them, from 1950, had a great shot of Yvonne DeCarlo from Slave Girl on the cover. I had it framed, gave it to my dad, and later reinherited it. It sits above my DVD shelves.
I really like Shotgun. DeCarlo, Hayden, Selander — what’s not to like?
Good picture, mostly outdoors in and around Sedona, with Zachary Scott as yet another weasel, and written by Rory Calhoun. Scott was the star of one of my favorite of the lesser-known Bunuels, the Young One. He did fine work in that. Funny thing, it’s much rawer that Lolita, but of course it got no attention.
