Before I saw the caption of the picture of Kirk Douglas getting punched I thought it was Joe DiMaggio, not Sturges, hitting him! I figured maybe he was taking an off-season ‘lark’ into acting.

Now I understand who Hawks wrangled Douglas into that shot. John Sturges probably used a baseball bat. No idea what Billy Wilder used, but it must have been huge.
