Tim Holt
(February 5, 1919 – February 15, 1973)
Happy birthday to one of my favorite cowboy stars, Tim Holt. He’s seen above in Trail Guide (1952), one of the last of his series of terrific Westerns for RKO. The bulk of these films have been released on DVD by Warner Archive. I can’t recommend these highly enough.
Thanks to John Knight for pointing this out.

Like you, I can’t give enough praise to the Tim Holt Westerns. Just under 50 movies were made and not a bad one amongst them. Hopefully Warner Archives will release volume 4 in the near future.
It always makes my day when someone comes along who loves the Tim Holt films.
Wish they’d made twice as many of them!
Happy birthday, Grandpa Tim.
Thanks for stopping by again!
Thank you for the site, it keeps me up on some great westerns. If you’re on Facebook, check out The Holt Family page for some pictures.
Wow, there are some great photos there.
Mind if I post a few on this blog?
Sure, go for it. Thanks again for all your work on this site.
Thanks. I’ll put up a few in the next day or so.
Stay tuned, folks!
I remember whenever I used to show my Dad “Treasure of Sierra Madre” he would always tell me, “Tim Holt, he was a cowboy star” and he said it with admiration. Now I had never seen Tim in a western so I’d hear my Dad say this and think, I guess that’s something I’ll never see, and really didn’t think of him as a western star. It wasn’t till these DVD releases and a Tim movie on TCM way back when that I’d ever seen him in a western. Now when I watch these Warner discs of TIm I think of my Dad sitting in a theater and watching these westerns, and this is where he learned to appreciate Tim Holt, who had been to me just another actor in “Treasure…” I am so glad to have discovered TIm and now appreciate TIm as much as my Dad did, he’s not only a natural in the part of the western hero, the stories are excellent and the actors are top notch. These are not the average Saturday afternoon movie westerns, these stories are well written and every movie is very entertaining.
I have discovered 2 cowboy heroes who I am now a fan of, who I really didn’t know much about before, Wild Bill Elliott & Tim Holt. I knew of Roy Rogers and had heard of Hopalong Cassidy (but had never seen him in any of his moives) but now I have seen many Roy and Hopalong movies, & I do love them, but the Tim Holt & Bill Elliott movies are something I now look forward to watching even more than these more well known cowboy stars. TIm Holt is one of the best and now I get what my Dad was talking about.
I’m also a fan of Tim Holt’s RKO westerns. He is also terrific in Treasure and Ambersons. Last night I watched one of his predecessor at RKO George O’Brien westerns on the recent Archive release and what a great movie it was- The Marshall of Mesa City- a tight 62 minutes, O’Brien gives a relaxed performance and Leon Ames a good slimly villain. The transfer is good-highly recommend this release.
Starting at 6:00PM ET Sunday, Feb. 17, Encore Westerns will show a block of 5 Tim Holt westerns.
My favorite cowboy after Ben Johnson is Tim Holt — which shows you just how highly I regard Tim Holt, a fine actor, a fine horseman, a fine gentleman. (John Wayne is on a plane of his own — I usually don’t compare him to other screen cowboys.) Thanks for posting all these pictures! I tried to find the Holt Family page on Facebook but could not.
(I found several other Holt Family pages, but they were not Tim’s family.)
I forgot to add a link to the page, sorry about that. https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Holt-Family/241445059208256
