Here’s a stack of production photos from John Ford’s The Horse Soldiers (1959). In them, you’ll see Ford, John Wayne, William Holden, Constance Towers and Willis Bouchey hard at work.
This last one isn’t a production shot, but it’s too beautiful to pass up.

Just wonderful–somehow it remains exciting to me to see pictures of Ford directing. If you think about it, there have not been so many photos of genius at work, like writers writing, painters painting, composers composing and so on. So to see a master of his art doing his job, well, I just have to say it thrills me.
And that last still of Wayne, horse, river, trees is so beautiful.
I feel exactly the same about these kinds of photos, especially with Ford.
I intended to caption them all, and gave it a go, but finally decided that they said all they needed to say without any help from me.
I always considered this a minor Ford film, but still, I love seeing those photos.
Once upon a time, I considered this minor Ford. Watching it recently, that beautiful Blu-ray, and I completely changed my mind.
This is a great film.
