Being on the East Coast, I’m thankful that there are people covering where many of these 50s Westerns were shot. Who knows when I’ll get out that way.
Today I came across Joe Maddrey’s post on film locations around Kanab, Utah, including a Western street from Westward The Women (1951). See below.
It’s part of a series — be sure to check out his photos of Ford locations.

Thanks for the plug. It was interesting that the locals all referred to this as the “Gunsmoke set.” There was no mention of “Westward the Women”… which is a shame, because I really like that one. It’s not the usual shoot ‘em up story. I’m always fascinated by how flexible the western formula was in the 1950s. I agree with you that it was the best decade for the genre… which leads me to the question “When is your book coming out???”
I’d been planning a sort of status report post on the book, but I’ll just toss it in here instead. There are two books in the works. The One-Eyed Jacks book is coming along and will be done first (A Million Feet Of Film).
When that one’s done, I’ll really pour the steam on the 50s Westerns book.
They’re progressing as fast as my fingers and real-life stuff like work and family will allow. Thanks for asking — and thanks for the shots of the set.
Toby, et al…I want to find a dvd copy…letterboxed…of ONE EYED JACKS and feel I have the best copy possible in a dvd of this great film. So, as an expert on the movie what dvd company has made the one that might be considered the best in a letterbox edition. I have a letterbox one now that is pretty good but there are so many cheapy ones on the market they have driven out any incentive for a quality manufacturer to make one so.????? See my email address below if you can be kind enough to let me know.
