Don’t know about you, but I’m sick of this whole SOPA/PIPA thing. The issue of copyrights and the Internet is a big deal, for sure, but a goofy blog about old cowboy movies doesn’t seem like the place to tackle it.
Especially when there’s a discussion going on of South Of Saint Louis (1949) — to be more topical, for today we’ll call it SOSL.

I’d like to see this one on DVD. I have the VHS.
I was looking forward to the McCrea box set coming, but I guess I’ll have to pass on it. I already have THE VIRGINIAN and BORDER RIVER (region 2) and have no interest in MUSTANG COUNTRY. CATTLE DRIVE would be nice, but I’m not springing for the whole set just to get one title. What happened to BLACK HORSE CANYON?
Awesome photo! Have to see this film soon. Terrific cast!
Have recently seen Scott in SHOTGUN and TREASURE OF RUBY HILLS. He was great in both.
Best wishes,
Laura
When I originally saw mustang country, joel’s character around the campfire at night told the indian boy about a magnificent black stallion that he chased. As he told the story a flashback came up of joel from black horse canyon chasing the stallion. When mustang country was shown on the westerns station this flashback was eliminated and the scene lost much of its punch with no flashback. No actor at age seventy ever rode as well as joel mccrea.Even ben johnson had gotten heavy, slouchy and slow in the saddle by age seventy. But not joel mccrea.
I am really looking forward to this Joel McCrea box set, and sure do hope that Black Horse Canyon is on a second set — I’d really like to have that one on DVD. Re Ben Johnson’s riding at age 70, his body was pretty much a wreck at that point, after decades of cowboying (he broke broncos and rode the rough string on the ranch in Oklahoma), rodeoing and stunt work in the movies. He was already in such bad shape in his 20s — including a permanently bowed left arm from a break that wasn’t set properly — that the military doctors classified him 4-F, which is why he wasn’t in the armed services during World War II.
