Warner Archive has announced the second volume in their Monogram Western series, appropriately titled The Monogram Cowboy Collection, Volume 2. This time, they turn their attention to Whip Wilson (six titles) and Rod Cameron (two pictures).
Rod Cameron stars in Fort Osage (1951) and Wagons West (1952).
Monogram Pictures seemed to spend a bit more money on these Cameron Westerns, and both of these are in Cinecolor. Fort Osage was directed by Lesley Selander, a real expert at this sort of thing.
Whip Wilson came along a bit too late to make a big splash in series Westerns, but his pictures are quite good. Directors Thomas Carr and Lewis D. Collins and writer Dan Ullman were also working on the excellent Wild Bil Elliott Monograms around the same time as the films in this set, which are: Canyon Raiders (1951), Stage To Blue River (1951), The Gunman (1952), Night Raiders (1952), Montana Incident (1952) and Wyoming Roundup (1952).

While frantically searching Amazon USA for details of the forthcoming
THE LAST HUNT (mentioned in a previous post) to my utter delight I
see that Columbia Classics are going to release THE LAST POSSE
in February. Its rare to have anything from Columbia these days let
alone a Western so this is great news! The film is top-notch with a splendid
cast and strikingly shot by the great Burnett Guffey.Possibly the best
of director Alfred Werkers Fifties Westerns.
I really thought Columbia had given up the ghost on Westerns especially
considering the large amount they issued when this fine series started.
The film is a Harry Joe Brown production;best known for his partnership
with Randolph Scott;he did however produce some great non-Scott
Westerns:LAST OF THE COMANCHES,THREE HOURS TO KILL,
STAGE TO TUSCON,GUNS OF FORT PETTICOAT.
What a great year (Western wise) 2012 is shaping up to be!
A very Happy Christmas to Toby and all the people who make this blog
so entertaining.
.
Great news. I too consider THE LAST POSSE outstanding and for me definitely the best of Werker’s generally fine 50s Westerns. Definitely one to savor for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.
And I too am thrilled that THE LAST HUNT, one of the greatest Westerns, is getting a DVD release and will hope for a good color transfer. It was on VHS but was pan and scan, so the letterboxed version was really needed.
Lots of first-rate Westerns with the word “Last” in the title. Along with the above, there’s THE LAST OF THE FAST GUNS, LAST TRAIN FROM GUN HILL, THE LAST SUNSET, THE LAST FRONTIER, THE LAST WAGON, THE LAST COMMAND…
Fortunately, none of these was the “last” Western…
Great news to finally get Whip Wilson on DVD, in what I hope will be top picture quality, and correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this will be the first time Whip has ever had an official DVD release anywhere. Two of the films, The Gunman and Montana Incident were thought to be part of the lost Monogram films list, so it will be great to finally see and own those very rare titles.
Jimmy Wakely’s Cowboy Cavalier on Monogram set Vol.1 was also thought for many years to be a lost film.
when will more mongram cowboy collection be released and what films will they be on the dvds??
Not sure. Warner Archive has been somewhat Western-less lately. Hopefully, the first volumes sold enough to keep ‘em coming.
I’ve heard on the western grapevine that Monogram Cowboy set Vol.3 will contain all Johnny Mack Brown films. I haven’t seen that officially in print yet, so can’t give any titles.
when will volume 3 of the monogram cowboy collection be coming out and how many volumes can we expect this year?
FROM THE WARNER ARCHIVE SITE, MONOGRAM VOL.3 OUT END OF MAY.
Whoa! Western fans and fillies – it’s time to saddle up for a spectacular sextet of Nevada Jack six-gun sagas PLUS a bonus trio of trail busters also starring Johnny Mack Brown. Yee-haw! The collection includes: The Ghost Rider (1943) The Stranger from Pecos (1943) Six Gun Gospel (1943) Outlaws of Stampede Pass (1943) Range Law (1944) Navajo Trail (1945) Flame of the West (1945) Shadows on the Range (1946) Law of the Panhandle (1950)
Thanks for the scoop. Been hearing a bit about this here and there, but never with actual titled. Included.
When is Vol 4 (plus others) in Monogram films issued by Warner BROS BE released. Also will others in Republic & Monogram be issued soon?
The Monogram Cowboy Collection Vol.4 should be on sale now. This time it features Johnny Mack Brown and Jimmy Wakely. Here are the details.
