The 100th anniversary of Ronald Reagan’s birth seems to have spurred quite a bit of discussion of his life and presidency. This isn’t the place for that kinda stuff and I’m not going anywhere near it.
But there’s one thing we can all agree on, however — he’s the finest American President ever to appear in a Fifties Western. Up top, that’s Law And Order (1953).
The Westerns he did with Benedict Bogeaus and Allan Dwan — Cattle Queen Of Montana (1954) and Tennessee’s Partner (1955, above) — are the ones to look for. VCI has a nice-looking, and nicely-priced, double bill of these. In a previous post, I excerpted some of the letters Reagan wrote to Nancy from location on Cattle Queen. It’s a fascinating picture of what the shoot must’ve been like.

Arguably the best actor of all the Presidents in fifties Westerns, but let’s not forget Dick Nixon’s brilliant shot as the dog killer Lefty Spanikopita in the unforgettable Hard Bark (’56).
