Do I have any recommendations? Not really (there’s so much good stuff), but I’ll be going for Apache Territory (1958) with Rory Calhoun and John Dehner. I’ve heard the Columbia DVD-Rs look great, and I’m on a bit of a Calhoun kick after watching the terrific Red Sundown (1956) again the other night. (Man, I wish Universal would put that one out.)

Toby,
The only problem with “Apache Territory” is that so much
of it was shot in the studio which cramps Ray Nazarros
style somewhat.
Having said that its a taut little Western and with Dehner
Leo Gordon and Myron Healey on board you cannot go far
wrong.A very nice scope transfer as well.
I highly recommend “Conquest Of Cochise” which looks
gorgeous and is pretty lavish for a Katzman film.
I am sure that the rather graphic (for the time) torture scene that director William Castle throws in must have
caused the censor problems.
Rory Calhoun was great other fine Calhoun titles are
“Dawn At Socorro” and “Powder River”
The Spanish DVD release of “Powder River” is a stunning
transfer and highly recommended!
“Powder River” also finds the wonderful Dehner up to
his usual dastardly tricks.
Is that Amazon or what?
On a Calhoun kick? Maybe you should be listening to Calhoun Surf by the Raybeats!
It’s countdown time to True Grit and there’s a very brief shot of Mattie as an adult, her sleeve pinned, walking through what might be a train depot. Is she about to meet a couple of Cogburn’s old Bushwacker buddies, Cole Younger and Frank James, as she does in the book? I guess we’ll see.
The other holiday Western hitting theaters is The Warrior’s Way, and though it’s been on the shelf for a couple of years, the trailer looks great. Geoffrey Rush, in full Western drag, looks up and says, “Ninjas. Damn!”
That’s Deep Discount.
