They don’t get much better than this. One of the movies that got me writing this book. Sorry it’s not widescreen (don’t be fooled by the titles).
Van Heflin is superb, as always. Tab Hunter does a really good job. And Phil Karlson demonstrates why he’s so ripe for rediscovery. (You can also watch his 99 River Street on Hulu. It’s not a Western, but it’s sure good.)

A very fine, near forgotten gem. It would be wonderful if Sony could get round to putting together a box set of some of their remaining westerns.
It’s available outta Spain, but it’s pan-and-scan. There are some widescreen copies floating around, but they’re near impossible to find. I’ve had no luck.
If nothing else, working on this book has shown me how many terrific Westerns are out there waiting for film geeks like us to find.
I just happened on to this movie by happenstance last night but thoroughly enjoyed it. Interesting to see Ray Teal in another villainous, opportunistic role, similar to that he played in “Ace in the Hole” as the corrupt sheriff of Los Barrios County. I never would have figured that Phil Karlson would be the director of a Technicolor Western after a career with low-budget (but high quality) black-and-white films noir earlier in the decade. I missed the opening credits so I don’t know if Will Wright appeared unbilled, as he often did. Another long-forgotten gem that deserves to be resurrected!
I have a widescreen DVD of this, obtained from amazon France a year or so ago. The DVD, an excellent transfer, is of the original English language version (although the DVD cover is in French and it has burned in French subtitles that I can’t find a way to turn off).
